Zimmerman Telegraph
The ZImmerman Telegram was a telegraph sent from Germany to Mexico, but was intercepted by Britian and later given to the U.S. The telegraph pretty much said that if mexico attacked the U.S. then they would gain back the boarder states.
Lusitania
On May 7, 1915, the Lusitania was blown up by German U-boats. The Germans warned that they would blow up any ships carrying guns or supplys. We went at our own cost. Afterwards, they promised to not fire on passenger ships.
Election of 1916
Woodrow Wilson's slogan for his campaign was "He kept us out of the war."
Contraband
Many new technologies of warfare were taken by other nations. Anything from machine guns to tanks to boats.
U-boats
U-boats were used by all sides. Germany used them to "blow up" the Lusitania. They were used for many things during WW1.
"Make the World Safer for Democracy"
On April 2, 1917, President Wilson went looking for a Declaration of War. Four days later, Congress gives it to him. Even though Wilson did not want to enter the war, he felt it was now a "fearful thing" to not be in the war.
