Wellfield Middle School Newsletter

5 December

Dear Parents & Carers

Preparations are well under way now for our forthcoming Christmas production of Aladdin. This takes place on Thursday 18 December with 2 shows at 5-30 and 7pm. Separate letters have gone out about tickets for the production. I hope you will be able to join us for this event.

We have a provisional date now for the next round of cycle training. This will be Wednesday 14 January 2015, weather permitting. We also have leaflets advertising this event which are available to all pupils from either myself or the school office. Please watch out for more details in the new year. Those interested will need to register by completing a form available from school.

Hospice Visits

This week our choir has made 2 visits to local hospices to sing a variety of Christmas songs and to chat with the residents. We have received wonderful feedback from the 2 hospices. I am very proud of all our choir members and thank them for taking part in this event.

Our end of term treat for pupils will take place on Friday 12 December and will involve a visit to the local theatre to see a production of Cinderella.

Christmas Craft Fair

The Year 5 Christmas craft fair will be held on Wednesday, 10th December from 1.30 until 3pm. Year 5 would be delighted if you could join them to see what they have been creating as part of their Grow £5 project, and to purchase a few christmas treats. Donations of mince pies and cakes would also be appreciated for the fair.

Year 5 Reading Program

The new Year 5 home reading system has proved very successful and will be continuing after Christmas. A huge thank you for all your support with this program. Certificates and prizes will be given out soon.

Christmas Lunch

Christmas lunch will be on Thursday 11 December. Any pupil is welcome to have lunch in school on that day. Those paying as a one of event are asked to do so by using the electronic JOINOS which we wrote to you about a little while ago. If you are not sure about payment arrangements please contact our school office in the first instance.

Walk once a week

This is proving to be a popular feature for Key Stage 2 classes. Badges are given out each month to all those who have walked or cycled a minimum of once each week during a month. Well done in particular to 5M and 5E who are the joint winners of the WOW trophy for November. These classes both registered 27 pupils achieving a badge.

The start of next term will see considerable changes in terms of staffing. Mrs Bullock is leaving us to take up her post as Deputy Headteacher at a school in Newcastle. Mrs Bullock has made a huge contribution to the leadership of our school both as a Key Stage Manager and as Head of Mathematics and she thoroughly deserves her promotion to Deputy Headteacher. I wish her every success for the future and thank her for all the support she has given Wellfield over the last few years.

As you know the time has come for me also to leave Wellfield and head off into retirement. It has been a great privilege being Headteacher of Wellfield for the past 9 years or so and I thank you all as parents and carers for the huge support you have given me over the years. The school will be led from January by Mrs Kemp who will be acting Head of School and who will be supported on a part time basis by an acting Executive Headteacher, Dr Guthrie.

I wish the new leadership team every success as they steer Wellfield towards outstanding in the future. These are exciting times for Wellfield as it treads new ground whilst retaining its unique and much cherished school identity and ethos.

New Appointments

From next term, Miss McElderry will take over as Key Stage 2 Learning Manager and Mrs Heslop will be acting Head of Mathematics. I would like to congratulate both colleagues on their appointments and wish them all the best for next term.

We also welcome Miss Anna Peart who will be acting Deputy Headteacher.

End of Term Arrangements

This is the last newsletter for this term, although we will send any urgent messages out via text messages or separate letters. Term ends at 3-30pm on Friday 19 December and school opens for everyone on Tuesday 6 January 2015. Please note that Monday 5 January 2015 is a staff training day and the school will remain closed to pupils on that day. I wish you all a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Football Report

The year 7 boys played John Spence last night and set up a very competitive match. Wellfield scored first with Luke Fegan breaking through to put it past the keeper. Wellfield certainly outplayed John Spence for much of the game with Cameron Baker making some superb saves and Declan Downey working hard in defence. Unfortunately John Spence scored some late goals leaving us beaten 6-3. The boys should be proud of their efforts and on another day they could of won.

Iris Shop

The IRIS shop opened for business this week where children enjoyed spending their hard earned merits. Mrs Heslop would like to thank Maddy Welsh, Naomi Whinfield, Amy Bell, Max Earnshaw, Alex Harrison, Robert Mole and William Ord for giving up so much time to help out.
