NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
September 20 2019
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
It’s homecoming at NMSHS! Nederland Elementary School has been invited to join in the festivities! Tomorrow (Saturday) students who wear their “I am Ned” shirt get into sporting events for free. There is a soccer game at 9:00am (Peak to Peak U14 game) and at 11:00am there is a Varsity Girls Volleyball game. There’s also a barbeque from 10:30-12:30 that morning.
Also, any NES student who would like to walk in the parade may do so. Anyone who is interested (kids and parents, too!) may meet at Guercio Field between 1:00 and 1:15 for a 1:30 parade start.
Did you know that NES and NMSHS have a shared mission and vision? These powerful statements were created four years ago by the staff and community at both schools:
Mission: Nederland Schools educate, empower, and enable all students to become culturally, socially, and environmentally responsible, preparing them for careers, college, and beyond. Students become contributing global citizens who think critically and thrive in an ever-changing world.
Vision: Nederland Schools are nurturing, safe, and engaging environments for all students. Students embrace diversity while treating others with respect and compassion. Students use grit and perseverance to solve problems creatively, improving the world around them. Students are inspired and curious lifelong learners.
Have a great weekend,
Laurel

A little about me:
I was born in Idaho and raised in Denver, so I'm close to being a Colorado native. I moved to Nederland in May of 1979 and began working at Nederland Elementary that September. I have happily worked at both Nederland Elementary and Nederland Middle/Senior High ever since.
A little about my family:
My husband and I have two grown sons. Our oldest lives in Denver and is a producer for Altitude Sports Network. Our youngest is a banana expert and lives in Hawaii on the island of Oahu.

Favorite Hobby: Motorcycle Travel
Favorite Quote: "Day by Day, what you choose, what you think, and what you do is who you become." --Heraclitus
A little about my family: A transplant from the middle west, I live in the foothills of these Rocky Mountains with my wife and my two dogs, Cosmo & Scout Potato.
Favorite color: ORANGE!
Favorite food: Sushi, specifically Uni
Favorite Animal: Girafftopus: They're only found in a cave in Kenya in which there is no known depth.
A little about me: I prefer to explore our world on a motorbike, on as many dirt roads as possible. I enjoy eating elk, cooked over an open flame. I am a consumer of good storytelling.
Amy Shuman, Special Education
A little about me:
I grew up in Indiana and taught there for three years. I loved the job that I had there, but after a while, I felt the need for a new adventure. So I moved to Florida to be a wilderness instructor for Outward Bound, leading at-risk and adjudicated teenagers on 30-day canoeing trips. After instructing for two years and then taking a position as an education coordinator for a year, I decided that my professional adventuring days were over and it was time to come back to the classroom. I moved to Colorado for the mountains and fell in love with the Nederland area. I’m so happy to live, work, and play in this community.
A little about my family:
My parents are retired and traveling the country in their RV. I also have a sister who lives in Indianapolis and a brother who lives in Portland, OR. My 2-year old nephew Henry is the cutest little boy in the world and he will be joined by a brother or sister in January.

Noteworthy
October Count
The official State of Colorado attendance window is Wednesday, September 25th - Wednesday, October 9th. Our school funding AND FTE are based on these numbers. Please make every effort to have your child come to school on these days!
Lice
Please see the attached files (below Noteworthy) for more information about lice. A few key points:
Lice can not fly or jump, only crawl and are passed to others usually by head to head contact but also by sharing combs, hats, coats with hoods, etc
Lice are very strong and do not like to leave their host's head because they die
Cleaning desks or classrooms have not proven to be effective at controlling the spread of lice
Not allowing students to share hats, etc is a more effective way to control the spread of lice
Students are not sent home if they have lice unless they are a PK student

District Accountability Committee (DAC) and District Parent Council (DPC) - WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Nederland Elementary School still needs representatives to the DAC and DPC. DAC Meetings are the first Tuesday of each month from 6:15 to 8:30 at the Ed Center. DPC District meetings are held one Wednesday a month. The first meeting will be on Wednesday, September 18th from 6:30-8:00. I am willing to incentivize parent volunteers with a $10 gift card to a restaurant for dinner on meeting nights. Please respond to this email if you’re interested in being a parent representative.
Pinwheels for Peace!
Join us if you are able for Pinwheels for Peace on Thursday, September 26 at 2:40 on the NES playground. Ms. B. has helped the students make pinwheels and peace signs and Ms. Susan has been teaching the students songs about peace. We will all gather to sing our songs and let our wishes for peace on pinwheels fly out into the world.

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social Emotional Learning at NES (Sept 16-20, 2019)
Neuroscience research indicates that being able to name what you are feeling helps connect your prefrontal cortex (wizard brain) to your emotional limbic system (lizard brain). Naming your emotions helps tame those big feelings and allows you to think about what to do next. With this information in mind, students worked to expand their emotions vocabulary this week.
Students as young as first grade talked about feeling "furious" instead of mad or "elated or proud" instead of happy. Third graders considered what it meant to feel "ecstatic", "suspicious," or "content." Fifth graders delved into concepts like feeling "restless, disappointed, numb or tense." The next time someone only tells you they are "feeling" tired, ask them to choose a juicy, descriptive emotion word to authentically share how they feel. A rich emotions vocabulary can give us insight into ourselves and others.
To learn more about building your child's social-emotional skills, join us on Oct 9th for "How Connecting Deeply with your Children helps them Learn."
