Counselor's Corner
Piney Point Families,
During the month of February, our students will be learning about the character trait, HONESTY. They are learning that honesty means:
• Telling the truth all of the time
• Keeping promises
• Being trustworthy
• Do not lie, cheat, or steal
Checkout my newsletter on Honesty for additional resources. My Bitmoji page is also always a resource for you as well.

Kid's Heart Challenge
Hello Piney Point Elementary School Families,
We have officially kicked off the Kids Heart Challenge Road Trip with the American Heart Association, and we need your help! Over the next 3 weeks, students will be learning about their heart, raising awareness and funds for the American Heart Association. Our school's goal is to raise $3,000 and for every student to complete Finn's Mission. Raising money is not required to participate. Students can participate just by making a healthy pledge online to "Be Kind" or "Be Active."
The Road Trip started Friday (1/28) with your student(s) watching this video at school.
PARENTS – HERE’S HOW TO GET STARTED
Step 1. Visit our school’s Kids Heart Challenge page: http://www2.heart.org/goto/piney-point-school OR download the Kids Heart Challenge App and search for our school and sign up!
Step 2. Complete Finn’s Mission
Your student will collect souvenirs along the way, including their own Heart Heroes, Mystery Merch, and more. You can check these out on the KHC envelope or your KHC online account.
Finn’s Mission will be your road map along the way! Check it out on the Kids Heart Challenge app or online. Watch Finn's video here!
Why we support the American Heart Association: Every 40 seconds someone in America suffers from a stroke. Complete Finn’s Mission to learn how your family can recognize and react to a stroke FAST … because when it comes to stroke every minute matters!
Thank you for joining us on the road and helping us save lives!
Ms. Colonna and Mr. Manz
Math Ideas at Home
This month, again choose two or three of the following strategies to help increase your child's math vocabulary and understanding of math skills:
Primary (K-2)
- Count orally by twos, fives, or tens
- Give your student a number and have them count on. For example: Start at 6 and count to 20 and Start at 16 and count to 35.
- Have your student make a number book which contains a page for each number one to ten OR ten to twenty. On each page, glue clippings from newspapers, magazines, flyers, etc., illustrate that number concept (two dogs, three ducks, or four horses). Students can draw their own pictures as well.
- Use common household items, such as toothpicks, marshmallows, empty toilet paper rolls, twist ties, sticks, and paper, to construct shapes. Ask your student to talk about why it is that shape. (It is a square because all sides are the same.)
- While driving together, direct your child to look for objects with the same size and shape
- Arrange various objects (e.g., books, boxes, and cans) by various size and measurement (e.g., length, weight, and volume) attributes. Talk with your child about how they are arranged using comparison words like “taller,” “shorter,” “narrower,” “wider,” “heaviest,” “lightest,” “more,” “less,” “about,” and “same”
- For students who are ready to be challenged, try one of the intermediate activities below.
- Monitor your child's daily work from school and ask them questions about content and strategies they are using.
Intermediate (2-5)
- Try variations of the primary activities making them a bit more challenging for older children.
- Open a pack of Skittles or M&M’s and make a bar graph showing the number of each color found inside the pack.
- Watch the weather report for a week, write down the temperatures for each day, and then graph the temperatures.
- Use common household items, such as toothpicks, marshmallows, empty toilet paper rolls, twist ties, sticks, and paper, to construct shapes. Ask your student to talk about why it is that shape. (It is a square because all sides are congruent and all angles are right angles.) Encourage your student to use precise math vocabulary.
- Have your child look for patterns on buildings, rugs, floors, and clothing.
- Gather a tape measure, yardstick, ruler, cup, gallon container, and scale. Discuss the various things you can measure with each.
- Review equivalent names for measurements. For example, “How many cups are in a pint?”
- Ask questions that involve equal sharing. For example, “Seven children share 49 baseball cards. How many cards does each child get?”
- Monitor your child's daily work from school and ask them questions about content and strategies they are using.

School Nurse Updates
St. Mary's County Public Schools COVID-19 protocols for Staff and Students are based upon MDH and MSDE Guidance, including the January 6, 2022 Updated Guidance.
When Will My Child Be Sent Home From School Related to COVID?
The school nurse follows the MDH and MSDE Guidance when seeing students in the health suite with COVID-19 symptoms. As outlined in the document, COVID-19 symptoms are any ONE of the following:
fever of 100.4 F or higher
sore throat
cough
difficulty breathing
diarrhea
vomiting
new onset of severe headache (especially with fever)
new loss of taste or smell
When Will My Child Be Able to Return to School?
If your student has ONE of the COVID-19 symptoms, the “Decision Aid” in the MDH and MSDE Guidance, including the January 6, 2022 Updated Guidance, will be used to determine your child’s return to school date.
If you have questions, please contact your school nurse.
When Should I Keep My Child Home From School?
Do not send your child to school if your child is experiencing ANY signs/symptoms of illness. If your child required fever-reducing medication within the past 24 hours to maintain a normal body temperature, your child should NOT be in school.
Please contact Nurse Erica if you have any questions.
Information from past weekly newsletters
Please communicate with the school when your child is absent.
