The endocrine system
•Pituitary gland- secretes many different hormones, some of which affect other glands
•Thyroid gland- affects metabolism
•Parathyroids- Help regulate the level of calcium in the blood
•Adrenal gland- inner parts helps trigger the "fight or flight" response
•Pancreas- regulates the level of sugar in the blood
•Testis- secretes make sex hormones
•Ovary- secretes female sex hormones
The Limbic system
•Hippocampus- linked to memory
•Corpus callosum- axon fibers connecting the trice reveal hemispheres
•Thalamus- relays messages between lower brain centers and cerebral cortex
•Medulla controls heartbeat and breathing
A Motor Neuron
•Dentrites- receive messages from other cells
•Axon- passes messages away from the cell body to other neurons, muscles or glands
•Neural impulse- action potentional, electrical signal traveling down the axon
•Myelin sheath- covers the axon of some neurons and helps speed neural impulses
•Terminal branches of axon- form junctions with other cells
The Peripheral Nervous System
•Somatic nervous system- the division of the peripheral nervous system that controls and the body's skeletal muscles
•Automatic nervous system- the part of the peripheral nervous system that controls the glands and the muscles of the internal organs (such as the heart). It's sympathetic division ariuses; its parasympathetic division calms
•Sympathetic nervous every system- the division of the automatic nervous system that arouses the body, mobilizing its energy in stressful situations
•Parasympathetic nervous system- the division of the automatic nervous system that calms the body, conserving its energy
