Week Ahead @Southview
Week of September 23rd, 2019
We Are One!
Thank you to Mrs. Collins & Mrs. Kent for their coaching of our three soccer teams! These teams will compete at Woodbine Fields in Kingston! We wish our teams success and a great day of fun and sportsmanship!
Our running club has been practicing three times per week with Ms. Bridgen leading the pack! They are running for exercise, fitness and some even for competitive preparation for the Fort Henry race. Keep it up runners!
Students and staff are excited to support the Terry Fox Run event Thursday, October 3rd from 12:00-1:00 at our school. We appreciate all the work of our Youth Access West class to prepare the route with inspirational signs and messages. Our Sunshine Hall will be decorated with coloured running shoes prepared by students with their heroes, dedications and inspirational messages. We are proud of this amazing tradition at our school and we are thrilled that to date, over the last 6 years, we have raised over $21,400 for cancer research! Any amount of donation is greatly appreciated as we work towards our school goal of raising $4000. If the school goal is reached, rumour has it Mrs. Boutlier and Mrs. Borges will be taped to the wall during our reveal assembly AND the top fundraiser will get to be Principal for the morning with Mrs. Borges! The donation link is below for your convenience.
On Monday, September 30th, we are encouraging students and staff to wear an orange shirt. Orange Shirt Day is in recognition of First Nations students at residential schools across Canada. Orange Shirt Day was inspired by Phyllis Jack Webstad, a Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation elder in Williams Lake, B.C., and by her first day at residential school in 1973, when she was six. Schools in the Limestone District School Board will recognize this day in support of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee's Calls to Action in support of residential school survivors and their families. Teachers will be sharing this message in age appropriate ways including reading mentor texts written by Indigenous authors that share a message of kindness, acceptance, inclusion and reconciliation. We will promote the message that Every Child Matters in a small step towards reconciliation.
Thank you to those who were able to attend our Open House last week. We appreciate your strong partnership between home and school! Together we are better! If you have any concerns or questions about your child's success, please contact their classroom teacher or the office.

EQAO Results
This month, parents and guardians will receive their child’s Individual Student Report (ISR). This report contains their child’s results from the Assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics, Primary and Junior Divisions, administered in spring 2019. These results did not impact students’ report cards last year.
EQAO results offer an independent snapshot that shows whether students are meeting literacy and math expectations from The Ontario Curriculum. In receiving the ISR, there is an opportunity for parents and guardians to have discussions about their child’s achievement within their family or with a teacher (e.g., parent/guardian-teacher interview).
EQAO data should be considered alongside other information—such as in-class assessment results, report-card grades and teacher observations—so parents and guardians can build a fuller understanding of their child’s learning.
Parents and guardians can learn more about assessment results through EQAO’s website (www.eqao.com)
