WM 2nd Grade Curriculum Update

Reading and Writing
In unit one, Second Grade Reading Growth Spurt, students will be working towards the big work of reading with fluency, stamina and comprehension. Students will also be tackling hard words and using what they are learning in writing to help them think more deeply in reading.
In unit one, Improving Narrative Writing, students will be increasing independence, transferring what they have learned under guidance and through shared inquiry to create, revise and edit small moment narratives. .
Math
The main concepts of Unit 2 are for students to:
*Identify the place and value of a 3-digit number
*Read, write, model, and compare 2- and 3-digit numbers
*Measure and compare the lengths of objects
* Model problem-solving strategies on a number line
*Practice math strategies to add and subtract fluently
Science
Students will investigate three units throughout the year. Within each of these, students will plan and conduct investigations, analyze data, make observations, ask questions and construct arguments with evidence. The three units that will be studied throughout second grade include:
- Insects and Plants
- Solids and Liquids
- Pebbles, Sand and Silt
Social Studies
Communities: Past and Present is our current unit of study. Students will understand that:
*The people of our local community have different behaviors, beliefs, values and traditions.
*The locations of settlements and developments in my local community have changed over time.
*My local community life is affected by global and local changes.
LMC - Library
Second graders are practicing library procedures, including checking out, returning, and renewing books. We’re also looking more closely at the parts of a book and the types of books available in the library.
Music
Technology
Students will be able to identify laptop parts and navigate the laptop. Students will be able to identify specific icons and use the touchpad to open and manipulate items on the computer screen. Students will begin to open, save and manage files.
Art
Why do people make art? Why is art important? Where do artists find inspiration? How do artists change the way you see the world around you? (Express Yourself! Self Portraits, O’Keeffe Flowers)
PE
We are working on dribbling, kicking, and passing skills. Students will play various, modified soccer games to enhance their skills. Towards the end of the month we will transition to throwing and catching.
Guidance
We are continuing to learn about Kelso’s Choices. This month we are focusing on what to do when we have a small problem. We will also begin to identify others’ feelings and understand other’s perspectives.
