A Note from Our Principal
Dear North Beach Families and Community,
It was a busy first full week of school! Yesterday we held our first fire drill. The fire department visited and made some recommendations for how to accommodate our growing school. We also celebrated our first monthly community time assembly. We gather as an entire school once a month to build community and reinforce social emotional learning goals. At this week’s assembly, we reviewed “The North Beach Way,” our schoolwide expectations that support a safe, kind and respectful environment for our students. Ms. Burton led the school in song, and several of our students taught us how to greet one another in Amharic, Spanish, and French.
We have some upcoming events next week I want to make sure you are aware of. Tuesday, September 17, we will be having our annual Curriculum Night and Enrichment Fair. There will be two classroom information sessions available to attend so that parents with more than one child can go to both sessions. This event is intended for adults only; childcare is not provided.
The schedule for the evening is:
6:00-6:30 – Enrichment Fair
6:35-Staff introductions/PTA presentation
7:00-7:20 – Presentation #1
7:25-7:45 – Presentation #2
On Thursday, September 19 at 6:30, join us for pizza and learn about the WatchDOG program. WatchDOG Parents sign up to spend the day at school in their child’s classroom, volunteering to support the classroom teacher and the school as needed.
I hope to see you at these events. Have a wonderful weekend!

From the office
Every Wednesday is early dismissal. All students are dismissed at 1:10p every Wednesday. Staff still works a full day in meetings and trainings so we are not able to tend to students who are not picked up on time. If you are not able to be here on time, please call and let us know.

Volunteer Background Checks
Counselor’s Corner
Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! For those of you who are new to the North Beach
community, my name is Alysa Reid, and I am thrilled to be the part-time counselor at North
Beach. I am here all day on Tuesdays and Thursdays and mornings on Wednesdays.
Working in conjunction with other North Beach staff members and families, my role is to
support students in reaching their full potential. My goal is for each student to have a positive
school experience. If you have concerns about your student, please contact me at: (206) 252-
1535 or by e-mail at arreid@seattleschools.org. I work with students in classrooms, in small
groups (focusing on issues such as social skills, impulse control, emotion management,
separation/divorce, managing anxiety and grief) and individually as needed and am available to
consult with parents.
I eat most of my lunches with students in small group “lunch bunches” as a way to learn names and get to know our students better. I will be eating with all Kindergarteners and new 1 st -5 th graders in small groups over the next few weeks.
Please note that school counselors do not provide therapy or long-term counseling services.
However, I am available for crisis and brief, solution-focused individual counseling. If your child or family is in need of more intensive or on-going services, I am happy to share community
resources with you.
I look forward to another great year ahead! Please let me know how I can help.
Developmental Preschool Peer Help Needed
Hi North Beach Families!
My name is Kelly Holton, and I am the new Developmental Preschool teacher in room 2.
I am so excited to be here and be a part of this great community. My students start on Monday, September 16th and I have an AM and PM session on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
In the next couple of weeks, I will be wanting to add peer models to my class. Peer models are students who do not receive special education services and would be modeling typical four year old behavior to my three, four and five year old preschoolers. It is essential to an inclusive preschool program. I can have up to two peers in each session.
Please let me know if you are interested by emailing me @ kagriffinhol@seattleschools.org
Thank you so much, and please don’t hesitate to ask me any questions.

Are You a Good Matchmaker?
The PTA is looking for a volunteer coordinator(s). If you like learning about parents’ super skills other than parenting, this is the position for you or two of you. Interested? Contact Suzanne at president@northbeachpta.org.
PTA Spotlight on Volunteers

Building Leadership Teams (BLT)
Hi Folks! I am your PTA Parent Representative on the Building Leadership Team (BLT) here at North Beach.
The Building Leadership Teams (BLT) were created by SPS “to advise and work with the building principal/program manager and building staff in facilitating continuous improvement of student achievement.” (SPS, Policy F20.00 April 1996). The BLT touches on all aspects of school policy. (goals of the school and how we implement them, homework policy, recess policy, professional development for teachers and staff, etc.)
If you have concerns, questions or suggestions about any school policies, please share with me. I will bring that information to the monthly BLT meeting.
Thank you and have a great year!

Colors of Peace
Come enjoy ‘Colors of Peace’ at the Seattle Children’s Festival, September 21st and 22nd from 10am to 4pm, Seattle Center Fisher Pavilion, peace art created by your kids. Students answered the question, “What does peace look like to me?” with their art. The exhibit is the first ever ‘Colors of Peace’ outside of its primary home in Rome, Italy. It includes artwork from over 13 schools around Seattle with 200 works on loan from the Roman Collection.
The opening ceremony for Colors of Peace starts at 10am on Saturday, September 21st in the Seattle Center Armory Building. It will include music with a special appearance by Pastor Patrinell Wright, creator of the Total Experience Gospel Choir and many special surprises. The event will conclude with a special Parade of Nations and Peace Walk from the Armory Building to the exhibit located in and around the Fisher Pavilion. We would love for you to join in!
“Colors” is inspired by UN Resolution A/RES/36/67, encouraging public events to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Peace on September 21st. Peace Run Italy started “Colors” in 2017 with an exhibit around the Coliseum in Rome. It includes kids work from over 40 countries with over 7000 pieces.
Seattle joined Colors of Peace this year with its first exhibit at NW Folklife and the first in the world outside of Rome. The current exhibit here in Seattle on September 21st coincides with the annual event in Rome. Original artwork from North Beach Elementary School students joined the Roman collection and become a part of their permanent collection. Copies will be on display here. An art booth will be set up in the Fisher Pavilion from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday so kids can create art for peace. Sponsored by the Sri Chinmoy Oneness Home Peace Run, www.peacerun.org.

Ballard High School Playmakers
The Ballard High School Playmakers will present three dynamic theatrical productions this year. We appreciate you sharing this news with students and families.
Radium Girls | October 17, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26, 201
A hundred years ago, radium was a miracle cure used to fight cancer. It was quickly commercialized and used in products for consumers, including luminous watches that glowed in the dark. Radium Girls tells the story of the New Jersey factory girls who hand-painted the dials until they mysteriously became ill, started dying, and ultimately fought back.
Musical Theater production:
Xanadu | March 18, 19, 20, 26, 27 and 28, 2019
This comedy musical is based on the film which starred Olivia Newton-John. It’s 1980, and Venice Beach chalk-artist Sonny is frustrated by his mural of the Greek muses. A Greek muse named Kira dispatches to L.A., disguised as a human to encourage him in his art. Together they dream of opening a roller disco club named Xanadu. Xanadu is a love story with legwarmers and campy music.
Rumors | May 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, and 16, 2019
Set in the 1980s at a large home just north of Manhattan, the deputy mayor of New York has accidentally shot himself. As four couples gather for a 10th anniversary wedding party, the mayor’s lawyer must quickly concoct a story to avoid a scandal. Speculation quickly piles up, leading to laughable, ludicrous moments. Rumors is written by Neil Simon.
