Writers Workshop
Read about our writing journey.
From the beginning~
I arrived in first grade an accomplished kindergartener proud and happy to be me! I began writing on the first day (on the green paper), showing off my strengths as a writer. I could colorfully illustrate a one page story and maybe even add some words! My work made me feel proud!
My story in pictures~
As the year began I learned how authors use setting to help a reader understand the story. I learned how shapes can help make my illustrations easier. Still, I tried to add a few words while I worked to tell my stories in pictures.
My story~
As we worked in writers workshop I learned that writers write about things that have happened to them. I learned these stories are called Personal Narratives. I was beginning to write more words and I was feeling proud of my work.
Words, words and more words~
I am learning to write stories with a beginning , middle and end, but sometimes it can be hard to keep the story in my head while I work. I know I need illustrations to help the readers and to spell the words we learned in class and write sounds for words I don't know yet! Thank goodness my teacher said my story is the most important thing, but that I should try try best!
Crafting writing~
I am starting to notice writers use craft to make their stories more interesting. Sometimes they use speech bubbles, different sizes of letters, and onomatopoeias (words that make sounds). I am trying these out in my stories! They're fun, but I still have to remember how to make illustrations, tell my story, and spell my words! This writing thing is getting complicated, but its OK I am strong writer!
The 31 day Writing Challenge!
Our teacher told us about a writing challenge by a group of teachers on a their blog, Two Writing Teachers. Teachers and kids all over the world joined the challenge and had their writing published on the Two Teachers blog! This was a fun challenge! We loved writing EVERYDAY and we all grew SO MUCH as writers in this challenge! You can visit our first days challenge here. We enjoyed this challenge SO much that when it was over Grace challenged our class to another 30 day writing challenge!
Genres~
I am noticing writers write different genres. They write non-fiction to teach the reader new things. Non-fiction writing has a table of contents, labels, captions and headlines to help the reader!
Poetry~
Poetry is another genre I have learned about. Poems are short and look like a list because they leave lots of white space on the sides. I also noticed that poems have titles, repeated words and the line breaks can change the way a poem sounds. We visited The Poem Farm by @amylvpoemfarm to learn more about poetry. AND guess what? She published our poems in her site! HOW COOL IS THAT!?
