Habit 4: Think Win-Win
In the next two weeks, my Canvas page will be talking to Coyotes about Habit 4- Think Win-Win, from Sean Covey’s 7 Habits of Happy Kids. Thinking win-win is the belief that everyone can win. It’s not you or me- it’s both of us! It’s the attitude we use to work cooperatively with others.
When we think win we are happier because we care about ourselves and other people. We balance courage for getting what we want with consideration for what others want. When conflicts arise, we look for win-win solutions. Sometimes there are roadblocks to thinking win-win. The most common attitudes that cause unresolved conflict include: Win-lose attitude: This is the idea that the pie is only so big so I’m going to get mine first and take the biggest piece.
When someone has a win-lose attitude they hurt others to get what they want. There is no consideration for the opinions or feelings of anyone else. A win-lose attitude is unfair, unkind and selfish. People with this attitude don’t mind stepping on others to get ahead. Lose-win attitude: When people have a lose-win attitude they allow others to take advantage of them. They essentially let people use them as a door mat. Often people with this attitude have low selfesteem and lack confidence. The let others walk all over them, treat them poorly and don’t think their own opinions or feelings count.
Lose-lose attitude: As the name implies, no one wins when there are lose-lose attitudes. People involved have lost hope and think “If I’m going down, you are going down!” We both lose and feel miserable. Luckily we can learn to have a win-win attitude! When we care about others and ourselves we can come up with solutions that make everyone happy. You can help your child develop a win-win attitude. Start with a small conflict you tend to have with your child (homework, chores, etc.), then discuss a win-win solution to the conflict. What would make you happy and your child happy? What can you live with or without? Brainstorm with your child, then write down the solution. Have it available to remind each other the net time the situation arises.
