Fall Break - No School

We have had a great two weeks at Geist Elementary. Students are hard at work in the classroom while being challenged and engaged. Thank you for sharing your children with us each day. Please know the newsletter is packed full of information covering School Safety week, spirit week, math instruction, clubs, lunch, etc. Thanks for taking the time to read all the way through the newsletter!

This week we focused on School Safety and we discussed how our students help keep us safe at school in many ways. Two areas we discussed were that students should never open the door for strangers and we must stay quiet during drills and listen to the adult in charge. We discussed how parents help keep us safe by wearing their visitor badges on their shirt lapel at all times. This week we practiced a lock down drill with Officer Matt Simmonds, our SRO for HSE, and we did a tornado drill. We do encourage that all families work to have safe places at home for fire and tornado. Where will you meet up if everyone evacuates that house from a fire?

## We are teaching children to use different methods to solve problems!

Do you remember when you sat in math class and learned the standard algorithm for different operations? We knew what to do, but we didn't always know WHY we did it. Does anyone remember WHY when dividing fractions, you flip and multiply by the reciprocal? (and don't say, "because my teacher told me so!")

We are teaching children various methods to solve problems. We are teaching them to think and to understand math. We want a conceptual understanding. Certain situations are more suitable for various methods and we need to learn when to use different methods. Indiana state standards and mathematical process standards require that students move into a more conceptual understanding and not just a procedural understanding of math.

Tonight after dinner, we encourage you to ask your child to share with you two or more ways to solve a problem! Students across the building are learning there are multiple ways to solve math problems. We don't always have to use the standard algorithm. Students can use the Lattice method in multiplication or the pull down method in addition! There are many ways to solve a problem!

## What if Your Child Becomes Ill at School?

The nurse will contact you - but she must have permission to treat from the student health form. Have you completed yours online yet? The health cards from previous years have been replaced by online forms. Please visit your student's Skyward account to complete the health form. If you have not completed it you will see a note on the health information tab. If you are unsure about your student's status please call the clinic at 317-915-4260.
