Fall Break - No School
This week we focused on School Safety and we discussed how our students help keep us safe at school in many ways. Two areas we discussed were that students should never open the door for strangers and we must stay quiet during drills and listen to the adult in charge. We discussed how parents help keep us safe by wearing their visitor badges on their shirt lapel at all times. This week we practiced a lock down drill with Officer Matt Simmonds, our SRO for HSE, and we did a tornado drill. We do encourage that all families work to have safe places at home for fire and tornado. Where will you meet up if everyone evacuates that house from a fire?
Finally, 3rd and 4th grade students had presentations from the Fishers Fire Department today. Please follow up with your children to learn more about their presentations.
We are teaching children to use different methods to solve problems!
We are teaching children various methods to solve problems. We are teaching them to think and to understand math. We want a conceptual understanding. Certain situations are more suitable for various methods and we need to learn when to use different methods. Indiana state standards and mathematical process standards require that students move into a more conceptual understanding and not just a procedural understanding of math.
Tonight after dinner, we encourage you to ask your child to share with you two or more ways to solve a problem! Students across the building are learning there are multiple ways to solve math problems. We don't always have to use the standard algorithm. Students can use the Lattice method in multiplication or the pull down method in addition! There are many ways to solve a problem!
Solving Multiplication using the Lattice Method!
Solving Addition problems using other methods besides the standard algorithm!
Division using many methods!
