Engagement and Learning @ Western
What is Engagement?
Engagement is meeting the students where they are? Finding the right learning style and relationship that works for your students. It's about planning to make standards relevant to the learner. It's about getting students to buy in and own their learning.

What is STEM?
STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering and Math. Jobs now and for our students will lie in these fields. No matter if we are PARCC, Common Core, or whatever STEM fields will give our students an opportunity in the future. What can we do as elementary teachers? We can open their eyes to possibilities. We can help them learn how to think and give them a solid foundation in mathematical and science reasoning.
Vegetable Garden/Outdoor classroom
The money is arrived and the vegetable beds are on the way. Soil will arrive this week. 3rd through 5th graders will be moving soil into the beds and planting soon. The spot will be for all to use but we will start with three classes taking care of the garden.

Home Connections
Remember to create a home connection log as you are connecting with your parents. Whether face to face or through Remind101 keep a log of your connections. Open House is August 29th at 6pm so starting planning - Why should your parents come? What value will they gain from that visit? Resources, homework, AR Home Connect, expectations, have something for the students to share, new math book, common core standards, writing, and the list goes on. This is your chance to sell education to your parents and that we all have a challenging experience in front of us. Education is changing fast and it's not getting easier, we must be the ones spreading the message.
