Cedar Grove Friday Flash
January 12, 2024
Dear Cedar Grove Families:
We hope to see you at our Winter Concert this Tuesday, January 16 at 7:00 p.m. at Clarksburg High School. Students who are performing are asked to wear concert attire (white on top and black on the bottom) and to arrive at the high school by 6:00 for warm-up and rehearsal. In the event there is a delayed opening due to weather, the concert will proceed as scheduled. If schools are closed, the concert will be rescheduled.
Speaking of snow, if MCPS decides on a virtual learning snow day (announced by MCPS as code purple), we will send out the necessary information the day before in a master document for students to access their Zoom classroom. This document will also include your child’s classroom schedule, and this information will be posted on our school website. In alignment with MCPS expectations, our school day during virtual instruction will occur from 11:25 AM-3:45 PM with lunch occurring from 1:30-2:00 PM for all students. Please note that our two snow days that are embedded into the school year calendar will be used first before any virtual learning snow days take place.
As a reminder, Monday is a holiday and schools and offices are closed. Have a wonderful weekend!

Chromebooks for Home Use
Cedar Grove is using a cart model for Chromebooks this year which means Chromebooks stay in the classroom and do not go home. For those of you who would like an MCPS home use device, please complete the Chromebook Form to Distribute to Families to request a home use Chromebook. The purpose is to give Cedar Grove students the access they need for instruction if they do not have a personal or home device. Staff at central office will monitor the requests through the form submissions, will prepare a device, assign it to your student, and will deliver it to Cedar Grove. We will distribute it to the student. As you can imagine, the process takes some time, which is why we are asking you to put in your request so that you have the device when your student needs it. The home use device is to be kept at home for the academic year. Requesting the device implies consent of use in accordance with MCPS policy (IGT-RA) and acknowledgement that the Chromebook, software, and issued peripherals are owned by MCPS.
From Mrs. Hirschhorn, Media Specialist
I hope you've taken a moment to bookmark the January Media Monthly so you get all the updates every Friday! Please save the date for our Readathon Read Aloud Night! This event will give participants double reading minutes! Our Read-a-thon starts Tuesday January 16, 2024 and you should already have the packet of information, as well as your student's reading log. If you haven't already, activate your reader’s account as per the directions on the info packet.
Only minutes read during recess and before and after the instructional day will count - and of course weekends, etc. There will be special "double minute" events as our readathon progresses. On Tuesday, for example, we'll pull a genre on the morning news and if your student reads from that genre on Tuesday and Wednesday, we will give the student double points during our first minutes read checkin. Our first minutes read check-in will be Friday, January 19 to see how our readers are doing and also to get data to put on our bulletin board! We hope your families enjoy this wonderful event, which also helps benefit Cedar Grove!
Next week, please be on the lookout for the Science Expo application packet. This details all the information you and your student need to complete a successful project with a testable question. The completed packets are due on February 2. We are also looking for grownups to be our visiting scientists who have conversations with our young scientists during the Expo, which will be March 22.
