Understanding Fossils
The eighth-grade science team combined classes this week to visit fossil stations spread out between the classrooms. The students looked at authentic fossils dating back to the Cambrian period, compared fish and amphibian fossils, and discovered the changes in whale skeletons as they transitioned into the water. They used teamwork and data analysis to determine how fossils help organize Earth's 4.6 billion year history and create the geologic time scale. Earth has shown major changes in geology and biology over its 4.6 billion year history. Evidence of these changes have been detected in the rock strata. Fossil evidence tells us about the evidence and changes in life forms over time.
“Hands on minds on activities allow the students to take an active role in creating their understanding of the world,” explained Maggie Patel, one of the eighth-grade science teachers.
