Reading Workshop
This week, we will consider the question: “How do you find important story characters?” First, we’ll read Violet’s Music, a realistic fiction story about a girl who loves making music with her friends. We will also read Wolfgang Mozart, Child Superstar, a biography about the real life of this famous composer and musician.
Target Vocabulary: nursery, shake, smooth, whenever, hours, alone, real, museum
Phonics Skills: Vowel digraphs (ai, ay)
Vocabulary Strategy: Figurative language/idioms
Comprehension Skill: Story structure – tell the setting, character and plot in a story
Comprehension Strategy: Question – ask questions about what you are reading
Before beginning our next Gooney Bird Greene story, we are going to have fun reading shorter picture books that use idioms. Idioms are phrases that express what the words actually mean. It is figurative language that has unique meaning to the group of words. The idiom, "Butterflies in your stomach" does not mean you have actual butterflies in your stomach. It means you feel nervous. Below are the covers of some of the books we are going to share. Have fun with some of these as home.
Writing Workshop
The students have a fun Writing Workshop project planned this week. They will transform their Valentine boxes into a display piece about themselves. Using familiar graphic and text features; heading, photo, caption, text, list, illustration and labels, the students will use each side of the box to inform a reader about themselves. It will be a “lovely” keepsake of their time in second grade.
Math
Before we delve into Unit 7, the students will review the concepts introduced in chapters 1-6 and strengthen the learned skills and strategies. They will work in small groups and create anchor charts for various skills and concepts they have learned so far this year. Then, each group will get a chance to present to the class. This is fun way to review and practice what they've learned.
Students will then begin Unit 7, Metric Measurement of Length, mid week. The Second Graders will learn to estimate and measure medium and short lengths using the standard metric units of meters (m), and centimeters (cm). Using these standard units of measure, the students will compare various lengths. They will apply the addition and subtraction skills and strategies, such as bar models, taught earlier to real-world problems involving metric length.
