Varsity Girls Soccer - Coach Erpelding
Maranatha 4/6/21
This was the first game we had in 10 days and only had 1 practice leading up to it in 9 days. Our practice Monday was so-so which surprised me. So I was worried about the game Tuesday. Well my worries came true. We came out flat, which I struggle to understand. I thought we'd come out with our hair on fire. They scored three in the first 15 minutes. Luckily they were three goals that we can get corrected, meaning we made mistakes leading up to the goals. It wasn't stuff they did, it was stuff we didn't do. We had our opportunities the whole first half to score two or three ourselves. We either just missed or hit the keeper or took a bad touch or got a bad bounce as we went to strike the ball. Let's just say we were not making our own luck. We finally got on the board when senior Alex Pascua played to freshman Jayla Erpelding down the line. Jayla played a great cross into senior Kate Erpelding which settled the ball, cut it back twice, and found the top of the net with her left foot. This happened with 4 seconds left in the half. We felt this was huge going into halftime. Psychologically being down 1-3 seems much more doable than 0-3. At half we all felt the game very easily could be tied or us ahead by a goal or two.
Second half we controlled the majority of the half but just couldn't find the net. We had several opportunities where we got a shot off or the ball was just a little too long or again bad touch and bad bounce. Jayla cut the score to 3-2 when she picked up a loose ball in the middle and beat the keeper 1v1 for the goal. After that we kept going at them, we just couldn't equalize. They got 4 and 5 as we were pushing numbers forward to get the equalizer.
All in all our girls played hard but they lay off hurt. We aren't in match fitness, which we will be getting too very soon with a lot of games coming up. Plus we were starting to gel as a team. So we don't start over but we are over 10 days behind. It will be hard to play catch up because we play 11 games in April and starting next Monday we play 3 games a week for 3 weeks. We will have to manage the girls to get rest but also prepare. So the girls will need to be doing everything right off the field to make sure we stay healthy. I will say that we are lucky to get the 3 games we missed rescheduled. Coach Kimberlin and I didn't think it was possible to find 3 dates with 3 different schools that matched up that worked for both of us, but her and the other schools AD's got it done. So we thank her and them for doing that for us!
We will get better that's for sure. Wednesday's practice was much better. So hopefully it will pour over into our game tonight with Tongy. JV 4:30 kickoff and Varsity is 5:45. Hope to see you there!!
Tonganoxie 4/8/21
The way we came out last Thursday night was a complete 180 compared to Tuesday. We looked like we hadn't missed a beat. Not sure what the difference was, maybe just being at our friendly confines was good for us. Whatever it was it sure did work and it worked fast. Freshman Jayla Erpelding got us on the board within the first three minutes of the game when senior Alex Pascua played a great through ball and Jayla was able to run it down and hit a shot with tons of topspin to make the ball dip and into the back of the net. You could see the relief in the girls by scoring this early and from that moment on the girls confidence grew like they knew we were winning this game. Really awesome to see! Jayla got her brace about 5 minutes later when senior Kate Erpelding played a great through ball and J hit a cracker from outside the 18. The ball hit the net before the keeper could get her hands up. The rest of the half we continued to attack and play good defense. We honestly could have been up 5-0 going into halftime. The second half was much the same as the first. Kate got goal number 3 of the game 2 minutes into the second half. She also had a great shot from outside the 18 into the lower right part of the goal. They got a few chances but not very many. Senior Leah Williams had 4 saves on the night and only one was remotely dangerous. Leah and the defense earned their first shutout of the season. Lainey Orr and Lauren Grauberger did help in the shutout because Leah had to come off due to a sore ankle. Our backline of junior Mallory Vickers, freshman Lauren Grauberger, senior Harleigh Moore, freshmanHolden Andrews, freshman Kyleigh Musick, freshman Madison Woodruff, and freshman Caitlynn Peterson along with our holding mid senior Rachel Pratt did a fantastic job of staying organized and moving as a unit. Again a complete 180 from Tuesday. We were able to play everybody last night which is always awesome! Every girl that stepped on the field did a fantastic job! We do need to be better at finishing our chances.
We have a big week next week! We travel to Louisburg on Monday for a JV 430 kick and Varsity to follow. Then Thursday we host the class of the league Spring Hill with a JV 430 kick and Varsity to follow. Friday we travel to Ottawa with a JV 430 kick and Varsity to follow.
Thank you to all the fans that showed up to the game and especially to the students! We had a great student section and you could see the girls feeding off of their energy! It was a fun and what was better a back-to-normal type of night!
Louisburg 4/12/21
Last night we lost 3-0 to a solid Louisburg team. But even with the loss we could take a lot of positives from the game. I thought we played fairly well, considering it was the first time on grass. We created many opportunities to score but just couldn't find the back of the net. I told the girls before the game that whoever controlled the midfield would win the game. That portion of the game went back and forth. During those periods when we controlled we played much better. Our fitness was a bit of an issue. We are still trying to work back to match fitness, but with so many games in a short time. It makes it really tough. I thought our defense overall played pretty good. Two of the goals were an own goal and a deflection. Their third was a great shot. We dodged a couple bullets but so did they. It was a tough loss but I think it added fuel to the fire to beat them at our place at the end of the month. Next up is Spring Hill here at home on Thursday.
JV Girls Soccer - Coach Weirick
Last Thursday our JV girls won 1-0 against Tongie! I couldn't be more proud of their efforts. Especially since we haven't played a game as a JV squad for two weeks. Our formation improved significantly since our first game and we ended up playing the majority of the game in their half of the field. Addison Metcalf had a stellar game and played in many different positions. She excelled within each one and was a huge asset to our team making scoring runs in every which way. Our defense, freshmen Caitlin Peterson, Madison Woodruff, Kyleigh Musick, Josie Brooks, Harper Andrews, and junior Madison Grosdidier worked together to stop about any attack the Tongie offense had. We effectively closed gaps and pushed the ball to the outside. Lexi Frost also worked very hard at attacking midfield to make stops and passes to our wings. Riley Steinman was aggressive the entire game and this ended up getting us a penalty kick! Riley was fouled in the box and freshman Xin Clobes took the PK. Xin effortlessly put one in the back of the net. The duration of the game, we spend defending in order to keep our lead. Again, Lainey Orr did an excellent job as our keep! I am so proud of this squad for their efforts!
The JV fell 0-2 to Louisburg on Monday. The first half we had a few scoring opportunities but ended up letting two goals in instead. We weren't able to close out on their shots. Once the second half began, we were able to adjust our game plan. Junior Riley Steinman played many balls to our wings, freshman Addison Metcalf and sophomore Lexi Frost. Sophomore Liz Mueting made her first debut and played an excellent first half as an attacking mid and a fantastic second half as left back - she was very aggressive and was able to stop Louisburg's attacks. Freshman Kortlyn Shockley and sophomore Max Mize played well up top and both were able to make attacking runs to goal. Overall, JV played well and I am proud of the adjustments we made in the second half and kept them to only two goals. We are looking forward to our next match against Spring Hill on Thursday at Eudora District Stadium.
Varsity Softball - Coach Finucane
The Cardinals beat Paola last Tuesday by a score of 11-1, in 5 innings, in game one. Eudora scored 5 runs in the third inning on singles by junior Harper Schreiner, freshman Rylee Griffin and a walk by junior Taylor Hadl. Junior Kira Baker was the winning pitcher, giving up only one run, 4 hits, and striking out 9. The Cardinals had 12 hits in the game with junior Elli Hann, Kira Baker, and Rylee Griffin having multiple hits. Han led Eudora with 3 hits in 4 at bats.
Eudora took home an 8-5 victory over Paola in the nightcap. Eudora started the scoring in the first inning off a single from senior Jayla Pierce. The Cardinals took the lead in the fourth inning for good when they scored 6 runs in that inning. The scoring was started by Harper Schreiner single driving in a run. Then Rylee Griffin added another hit driving in a run. Elli Han then singled and drove in two runs, freshman Lily Rife then doubled to drive in the other two runs. Rylee Griffin was the winning pitcher for Eudora, giving up five runs, eight hits and striking out 2 over 4 and 2/3 innings. Kira Baker came in and got the save for the Cardinals. The Cardinals collected 11 hits, Pierce, Han, Harper Schreiner, Griffin and freshman Kenzie Yoder all had multiple hits in the game.
JV Softball - Coach Hodges
Eudora Girls JV Softball played a Double Header versus Paola on Tuesday, April 6th. The first game started with a 0-12 run by Paola in the first inning but eventually, some great hits by Junior Rylee Calhoon, sophomore Bree Gabel, junior Carrie Young, freshman Blythe Fewins and sophomore Sarah Watts we were able to string together some runs and cut the lead down to 5-12. The girls fought to come back in the first game but ended the game in the 5th inning with a score 5-17 loss.
In the second game, our defense started out well and only gave up one run in the first. Junior Rylee Calhoon started the team off with a great double in centerfield, junior Bree Gabel with an RBI, scored Rylee for a tie in the first. Freshman Parker, Sarah Watts and, Carrie Young had singles but could not score. Sophomore Kallie Harper walked and freshman Lily Cooper hit a single into centerfield to score our second run. Our defense continued to play hard to hold the tie until Paola scored 6 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings. We strung a few hits and walks but could not score. Ended the game in the 5th inning with a score 2-13.
The next scheduled game will be with Spring Hill at home, on Tuesday, April 13th, at 4:30 pm.
Varsity Baseball - Coach Kilmer
Eudora High School Baseball
Tuesday April 6 vs Paola
Game 1:
_______1 2 3 4 5 6 7 R H E
Paola 0 0 1 0 2 4 0 7 9 0
Eudora 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 1 3 1
Facing one of the best pitching and the hardest throwing staff I’ve seen in 4A baseball, the Cardinals dropped a pair of games to Paola. Over all I was happy with our approach to these games. We competed with them to keep the games close for a while. We need to continue to work on the ability to play better defense and to eliminate strike outs. Senior Sebastian Lewis kept the game close until the 5 th inning when Paola plated 4 runs. The rally started with a
couple of walks and two poorly played bunts to open the flood gates. The lone Cardinal run came in the 2 nd inning when junior Bryce Clark singled, was moved to second on junior
Taggert Courter’s sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on senior Gavin Hobson’s ground out. It was a great job of manufacturing a run on only 1 hit. The only other threat we mounted was in the 6 th when senior Keaton Herron and Lewis both singled with 2 outs but were stranded there.
Game 2:
______1 2 3 4 5 6 7 R H E
Paola 5 1 0 0 0 3 0 9 11 2
Eudora 0 1 1 1 2 0 0 5 5 5
Game 2 saw a scenario play out that we have seen several times in the past. The opponent jumping out to an early lead and the Cardinals storm back for the win. It looked like it was going to happen again, but the rally fell just short. Paola jumped out to a 5 run lead in the first off a home run and then some shoddy defense by the Cardinals who committed an error combined with poor angles on flyballs that fell for hits. Junior Trenton Long held Paola in check giving up just 1 more run over the next 4 innings. After EHS had cut the Paola led to just 1 run, junior sJaykob Lemonds came on to pitch the last 2 innings. Unfortunately, he was greeted with an error to start the inning along with another error later in the inning and Paola picked up 3 unearned runs to set the final margin of victory.
Offensively the Cardinals posted single runs in the second, third, and fourth, innings and a 2 spot in the fifth inning to make it a 6-5 game heading into the sixth. In the second inning, Long walked, stole second and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The third inning run came on a Gavin Hobson single, a steal of second, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring when the catcher threw away the ball at third. The fourth inning run came when senior Zeke
Reazin walked and advanced to third on wild pitches as senior Will Schreiner walked. Reazin raced home with a run as Schreiner was thrown out a second on a double steal attempt. The last two Cardinal runs came in the fifth inning when Taggert Courter walked and was sent home on Gavin Hobson’s triple smashed over the leftfielder’s head. Hobson was driven home on Sebastian Lewis’ sacrifice fly to centerfield.
