Article Review: Khan Academy: The Future of Education?

by DeAnne Hainlen

This article, a transcript of an interview for CBS news for the segment entitled "Teacher to the World," was rebroadcast on September 1, 2013.

This article focuses on Khan Academy, a free online resource of digital lessons, aimed toward transforming the way we teach and students learn. Sal Khan, whom Bill Gates refers to as the "teacher to the world," has uploaded more than 3,000 lessons to the site. Within the Khan Academy site, there are mathematics lessons ranging from simple addition and subtraction to advanced calculus as well as lessons for physics, biology and chemistry. In the last 18 months there have been over forty-one million visits to the site from the United States alone.

Many public school teachers are using the lessons with students using the flipped classroom model in which students view the lesson content outside of class time.

But wait! Does online learning minimize the need for live human interaction? According to Sal Khan it means just the opposite. It does, however, shift the role of the teacher to coach, mentor, or facilitator of learning rather than lecturer which offers the teacher more flexibility to work with individual students during class time.

Cool Tool of the Month: Microsoft Lync

Microsoft Lync is a communication tool that allows you to quickly message, web conference and share your desktop with anyone. We think of it as a combination of Skype and Instant Messaging in one tool. Lync can be downloaded and used as a stand-alone application, or it can be used on the web.

The video below explains how to use the web version or download and install the correct version to your computer.

15 Microsoft Tools in 50 Minutes

Cindy, DeAnne, Scott, and Lisa (pictured above) presented 15 Microsoft Tools in 50 Minutes at the TCEA 10-11 Conference at Hebron High School on Saturday, November 3.

If you know us, you know the biggest challenge was to actually limit how much we said about each tool - 3 minutes per tool was simply not enough time, but we did it! (Barely)

We look forward to sharing these tools with you soon. If you want a sneak peek, you can see our presentation here.

How Can We Help You?
