Space Race, Cold War Comparison
The Constant Battle for Power Between Two Great Nations
The Race Began
On October 3, 1957 Russia launched Sputnik 1 into orbit. This event struck fear into the American public and the US responded with the creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The United states began to undergo the long and resource consuming process of Space exploration. These events are similar to the cold war in the sense that they both began with an action taken by Russia or the USSR and then the US did something in response. in the case of the Cold War it happened to be the USSR seizing control of Poland and the response from the US then would be the Truman Doctrine.
The Progression of NASA
Throughout the late 1950's NASA begins to make progress in catching up with Russia. The US is able to do things like launch a successful weather satellite. The space race continues for the next decade with many things achieved by both sides. Such as, the first animal and human were sent into space. But as the space race continues America seems to be the real victor when in 1969 they successfully send a man to the moon.
Some of the Achievements by Both Sides
First Man On the Moon
On July 21, 1969 Apollo 11 successfully landed a man on the moon.
The first Animal
The First Man Enters Space
The Space Race Continues
To this day the US is trying to explore the final frontier. We plan to send a man to Mars in the near future and Russia will always be our competitor. This follows along with the cold war. The Cold War continues to this day. There has never been a clear winner to either of these "competitions".
