OCPL Weekly Update
May 19, 2015
South Oldham Library
Many, many thanks to Julie Rogers for all her hard work on the Celebration of Women tablescape! She was left with the brunt of the work while I was on vacation, with assistance from Ellie and Melissa. She also spent countless hours working on the project on her own time: making trips to craft stores, assembling supplies, and crafting display objects at home, even enlisting the help of her husband to cut out the book vases. All of this in addition to finishing up the details of her daughter’s wedding next month! Few people show that much dedication and I really appreciate it! All of this resulted in the library winning the People’s Choice Award at the luncheon last Thursday!
On Friday I attended the Strong Leadership, Strong Women conference with Mary that was sponsored by the Prospect Chamber of Commerce. It was very interesting and informative. Thank you, Mary, for inviting me!
I’m in the process of interviewing page candidates for the summer months. I’m hoping to begin training them after Memorial Day with an official start date of June 4th.
Finally, the refrigerator in the break room stopped cooling last week so, with the assistance of my handyman husband and his pickup truck, we made a trip to the Home Depot to purchase one. The installation took quite a bit more work than anticipated because we needed to switch the doors to open in the opposite direction. What should have been a relatively simple job turned into a major ordeal!

The next week and a half will be super-full with summer reading promotion. I think I only have one day left, after tomorrow, that isn’t scheduled. Yikes! Thanks so much to everyone’s patience while I am in and out. I love the chance to talk to so many kids about the library and what it has to offer. They get really competitive during the Trivial Pursuit game that Jen G. helped me make as a fun part of the “Get Your Game On” presentation. I’ve been pitting girls against boys, so it’s been intense. Some sample questions, to see if you know them:
1. Which two letters are worth 8 points in Scrabble?
2. Zelda’s Link character was inspired by what classic Disney character?
3. What sport has a triple axel and a triple flip?
I have a sucker for anyone who sends me the right answers. (No google!)
Guess what?? We are in need of lots of toilet paper rolls, more paper towel rolls and 24 more dozen egg cartons for various summer reading program activities. Please send anything you have to the Children’s Library. Thank you SOOO much!!!
We’ve been busy and productive this week. Julie has been out at the schools promoting the SRP. We miss her and look forward to her being around more after May.
Do you know we have a digital adult coloring book available through Flipster? 30 pages of stress-relieving ocean animal patterns. Patrons can download it and print as many pages as they like, as many times as they like. It can also be printed from the PAC without downloading.
Search Flipster in the basic search box in the PAC to find it. Sort by Newly Added. You can also search for Flipster as a series title in Advanced Search.
Please let patrons know we have this.
I will be out of the office next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (5/25-5/27) at the 2016 OVGTSL (Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians) Conference. I will be at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville. You can text me at 502/744-5271 if you need me. Susan Michal, Elaine, and Cassie will be in TS on their regular schedules.
This is the conference I have been helping to plan for many months. I will be very glad when it is over. So glad that I will be taking Tuesday 5/31 (the day after Memorial Day) off to do NOTHING.
Have a great weekend.
