Landforms Field Experience
This week second-grade students discovered ways to slow and prevent wind and water erosion from changing the landscape during the Landforms Field Experience at the Saddlerock Trailhead. Along the way, they got to dig into local geology through hands-on STEM activities and discovered the unique habitat of the Wenatchee Foothills through the integration of music and art.
Developed six years ago by the Wenatchee School District Science Resource Center, the landforms field experience is perfectly tailored to the second-grade audience because it gives them permission to get dirty in the name of science.
The field experience connects with the Pebbles, Sand and Silt science kit being used in the classroom to teach Earth Science. Students learn about different rocks, sediments, sizes of sediments ,and landforms. In the foothills, students get to hike to the top of the Wenatchee Dome and see first hand how water has shaped the landscape of the Wenatchee area.
Beauty of Bronze
Groups of students from Sunnyslope Elementary put the finishing touches on their masterpieces during Art on the Avenues' Beauty of Bronze Andy Goldsworthy Challenge at Riverfront Park. Named after a British sculptor who uses natural materials, the students were challenged to create their own pieces during this activity.
Art on the Avenues’ mission through the Beauty of Bronze program is to promote in local children appreciation, understanding, and a sense of ownership in their community’s sculpture exhibit and instill the knowledge that art in its many forms is for everyone and that each person can create. This is the 15th year for the latter, an art education program for Wenatchee fifth-graders.

Officer Jared Shepard Named Second SRO
Wenatchee Police Officer Jared Shepard reported for duty in his new role as student resource officer (SRO) on Oct. 1, joining Jared Reinfeld, who has served in the post since 2017. In August the school board approved adding the second SRO position, taking the city of Wenatchee up on its offer to split the costs of two officers.
Shepard’s focus will be on the middle schools, while Reinfeld will focus on the high school. The two will split duties at the elementary school level.
Shepard has been with the Wenatchee Police Department since 2016. He previously was a sheriff’s deputy in Nebraska.
"The SRO position is a good fit for me because it’s all about forming bonds and developing relationships with kids," said Officer Shepard. "I’m excited to part of helping to enhance the role of law enforcement in the eyes of our students and community as one that’s not just about enforcing the law, it’s about people."

Beginning with the 2019-20 school year, the Wenatchee School Board and administration committed to holding Community Conversations series to help the Board listen and understand the underlying values, concerns, and priorities of district residents, school families, and students. The Board and administration can use feedback and data collected during these conversations to aid future planning efforts and policy.
The Community Conversations series is hosted in schools and local community venues quarterly. The Board and administration provide updates about the District and pose questions about various topics for stakeholder input. These conversations are about deepening the relationship and building a partnership with residents, finding common ground on our core values around education, and having dialogue around important educational issues in our community.
The success of these conversations depends on the involvement of many different voices and we hope you will join us and share your perspectives.
