Counselor Connection
10/9/2020
Parent/Teacher/Counselor Fall Conferences
This year conferences will look a little different. Counselors will be hosting 5 minute zoom meetings with parents and guardians using a waiting room feature in Zoom that will allow us private communication. This is a less efficient vehicle for our meetings, but one we need for the safety of everyone. Counselors always welcome Zoom meetings with all parents and guardians during our work day as well. Those appointments can be made through the Calendar links below. If you have a lengthy topic to discuss about your student, this may be the preferred way versus a 5 minute conference when others are waiting.
If you plan to meet a counselor using Zoom during our conferences, please be ready to tell us your students name, have your video on and your full name showing on your screen.
When? Monday October 12 from 5:30-8:30 PM
Wednesday, October 14 from 7:30 -10:30 AM.

RaiseMe Scholarship Opportunity- Senior Deadlines Approaching
RaiseMe is a platform that helps 9-12th grade students prepare for college by earning scholarships for their achievements in high school. Over 2,000 Colleges and Universities have partnered with RaiseMe, and award micro-scholarships for both academics and extracurricular activities.
How does it work?
Students create a portfolio and select colleges they’re interested in attending. As they add achievements to their portfolio - grades, club or sports participation, even college visits - they can see the micro-scholarships add up. Partner colleges assign a potential dollar amount to certain achievements, which shows students how much they’d be guaranteed in scholarships if they are accepted to that school. For example, one college may offer $100 for an A, and another may offer $500. As long as students meet the college’s eligibility requirements and any deadlines, and are accepted to the university, they can count on at least that much in scholarship awards on a per year basis. By following a college, you indicate that you would like to earn scholarships from that college, learn more about them, and allow the college to learn more about you. They will gain access to basic information about you when you Follow them.
Why is Following so important?
Following a college is the crucial first step in earning micro-scholarships. If you are Following a school, you'll be able to see what potential micro-scholarship dollars you'd earn based on the achievements on your Portfolio.
Colleges have earning deadlines – Many colleges have November 1st of their senior year as the following deadline.
You must be Following a college by their earning deadline in order to be eligible for Micro-Scholarships at that school.
Examples of schools that EHS students commonly follow: University of St. Thomas, University of MN- Duluth, Gustavus Adolphus, University of Iowa, University of Wisconsin- Stout, Creighton University
Visit www.raiseme.com to create a portfolio and start following colleges.

Native American College Fair
The Native American College Fair was started in 2013 as a way to bring colleges, universities and training programs to Twin Cities Native youth and their families. We provide a setting that allows students to have meaningful conversation with representatives about college life, courses and admission & financial aid requirements.
Although we enjoy gathering with you each year in order to protect everyone’s health this year we will not be having an in-person event, instead we have created a website for Native Youth, their families and community members which features information and videos provided by colleges, universities and financial aid opportunities. The website also features videos created by a variety of Native professionals and college students, including a recorded panel of college students discussing their educational experiences. The website can be accessed at https://sites.google.com/view/2020nativeamericancollegefair beginning the morning of Friday, October 9, 2020 and will remain available at least through the end of October.

Free and Reduced Lunch and Breakfast!
Your child may be eligible for free or reduced-price school meals
District 196 provides healthy meals each day for all students. And your family may qualify for free or reduced-priced school meals. If you participated in this program last school year and wish to participate again this year, you must submit a new application each year.
Federal funds and school-related fees are determined with this information. The failure to complete the application could result in the loss of millions of dollars to our school system, which would negatively affect teaching and learning in a significant way.
All students in our district are currently eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch through the extension of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s free meals program, however this funding is not guaranteed long-term. It is important families who qualify for free or reduced-price meals still apply this year.
To apply, click here, or visit https://paypams.com/Applynowisd196 or call 651-683-6958 if you need assistance filling out the application.
