Message from the Media Center:
2018-19 Battle of the Books
The Rock Hill School District Library Media Specialists are excited to announce another year of Battle of the Books. Battle of the Books is perfect for students who love to read and compete. Our goal for this program is to introduce our 4th and 5th grade students to a variety of literature, while at the same time allowing them to work as a team with fellow students, to improve their reading skills, and to enjoy the thrill of competition. Each elementary school in Rock Hill School District Three will be hosting Battle of the Books this year. Our plan is to develop teams within each school and then allow those teams to compete for a school level Battle of the Books winner. All of the school winners will advance to a district level competition to be held on Friday, March 29, 2019. We are so excited to begin this program and need to know how many of our students want to be involved. Each school will structure their Battle of the Books participation individually. As the media specialist at Lesslie Elementary School, I will begin preparing students by providing copies of the selected titles for them to check out.
If your 4th or 5th grader is interested in participating in the Rock Hill Battle of the Books this year – regardless of what school he/she will attend in January – please send the lower portion of the Battle of the Books letter back to school with your child by Monday, September 24, 2018. The link to the letter can be found below.
Let the Book Battle begin!

Character Traits
We are working to develop strong character in our students! Each month our school highlights one character trait and the trait for September is RESPECT—thinking and acting in a positive way toward yourself or others. To encourage this development in our students, we are presenting character awards to one student in each class on a quarterly basis at our recognition assemblies. Students will get an opportunity to vote for a peer who is demonstrating the respective monthly character trait.
Classroom Guidance
Our classroom guidance program is a series of standards-based lessons, which focus on educational/academic, social/emotional and the career development domains. Each class has guidance every other week. During the first few weeks of school, guidance topics will include: the role of the school counselor, academic skills for school success, and the character education word of the month.
School-wide Character Education
This school year at Lesslie we will continue with our school-wide character education/anti-bullying program entitled Bucket Fillers. The concept of bucket filling is simple: Everyone carries aninvisible bucket thatholds our good thoughts and feelings. When our buckets are full, we feel happy and when our buckets are empty, we feel sad. This program is based on the book Have you Filled a Bucket Today: A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids by Carole McCloud. The author presents a wonderful concept that is easily understood by children. Students will learn that they can fill others’ buckets by saying and doing things that are respectful, kind, considerate, and caring. They also learn that when they are mean, inconsiderate, uncaring, or disrespectful they dip intobuckets and remove those good feelings. We want to encourage students to beconscious of the way they treat others, whether it’s at home, school, or out in the community. We will recognize our “Bucket Fillers” quarterly. Students and staff members will be able to recognize others who have filled their buckets by completing a bucket filler card. Each child will receive a bucket certificate, and be recognized out our recognition assembly each 9 weeks.
We are looking forward to an awesome school year!
