Counselor Corner
This past week we talked about mental flexibility. The concept of mental flexibility means to be able to think, grow and learn new things. Developing this skill can also help your child if they are feeling worried or nervous. One way we show our kids how to be mentally flexible is to try new things. Maybe it is cooking a new recipe, reading a new book or it could be as easy as trying a new route home. As you attempt this new experience talk with your child. Maybe allow them to try the new skill with you. If you do this, it can help your child to be a more flexible thinker. In addition, please check out our Facebook videos on flexible thinking for your child on our Houston Elementary Page.
If students are having difficulties and need to speak to the Sam Houston Counselor they can use the link below. Mrs. Hughes is always available to assist.

Instructional Materials Distribution
May 11 Instructional Packets Ready for Pick Up after 9:00 a.m.
Procedures for Packet Pick-Up
We are asking that parents follow the procedures listed below to ensure the safety of all of our families:
*Wear a non-medical mask, cloth face covering while picking up materials.
*Practice Social Distancing and remain at least 6 feet away from others.
*When picking up packets, try to only touch the packet that you are taking.
Staying Healthy by Practicing Social Distancing
The wellbeing of our students and families is important to us. You can help by talking to your child about healthy practices to prevent the spread of illness such as
Wash your hands frequently
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Stay home when you are sick.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Need TECHNOLOGY?
If you don’t have technology at home and would like to borrow one from the campus please use the link to request a device. Since we have a limited number of devices, we are providing only one device per family. We generally need about 24-48 hours to fill the request. We will contact you when they are ready for pick-up. Our scheduled pick up dates are Tuesday and Thursday. If devices are not picked up in timely manner the device will be assigned to another family in need.

2020-21 School Supply Information
We are already beginning to plan for next school year, and we know how important new school supplies are for students and teachers. However, we also know that the recent pandemic has created financial difficulties for many of our families. We are happy to announce that one of our community partners will be donating backpacks and school supplies for every student at Sam Houston Elementary for the 2020-2021 school year!
A school supply list will be printed, but our families do not need to purchase supplies. Instead, we will be asking our families to donate a box of tissues to students’ classrooms at the beginning of the school year. This will help us stay healthy and keep us from spreading germs in our classrooms.
