Black History Month
Specials' Corner
PE with Coach Freeman:
Basketball continued. Then soccer!
Art with Mrs. Lovelace:
February is Black History Month and we will be creating projects in art that celebrate Black History. One of the books we'll read is "Henry's Freedom Box." We will also create a freedom quilt from paper.
Music with Mrs. Hinton:
This month in music we will continue identifying loud and soft sounds. We will recognize the difference between loud and soft in a variety of musical selections and improvise loud and soft phrases using instruments, We will and continue to reinforce concepts learned in the classroom such as letters, counting, and seasons.
Library with Mrs. Churchill & Mrs. Cunningham:
This month in the library, we will continue to discuss the characters and settings of our stories. We will also review the sequencing of a story, as we focus on re-telling the important events in our story, using our own words. This is a great way to build oral language and increase your child’s vocabulary, so don’t forget to try this at home, too!
Health Spot
Please follow the "need to stay home" guidelines as well as teaching them proper hand hygiene (wash for 20 seconds) and covering their mouth or nose when they sneeze or cough (please teach them to cough, sneeze on the inside of their shirt collar by lifting it up to their nose/mouth). Flu season is upon us and these are good habits to start with your children now.
Reminders from Nurse Kenzig...
Please send all students at least 2 changes of clothes in their backpacks. Even if your child has not had any accidents, they may need a change of clothes due to spills, illness, or outside activities.
Please ensure that your contact information in current in Skyward and you have provided emergency contacts as well.
We have completed much of our vision and hearing screenings, please follow up with either your family physician (hearing) or an Optometrist (vision) if you received a referral form in your child's folder (sent home prior to our winter break) for a more thorough evaluation. Once the referral has been completed, please return them to the clinic so your student's records can be updated.
Please check your students daily for lice or nits.
Lastly, please verify that your child has received any follow up vaccines necessary to remain in school. Although we make every attempt to send reminders home in your student's folders or via email, it is still the parent's responsibility to keep their child up to date in accordance with Texas State Law.
Counselor's Corner
During our SEL lessons we are going to be learning about big feelings. Did you know that helping your child recognize and talk about their feelings can help them manage their emotions better? It also has a major impact on choices and behavior. This month we will go beyond basic emotions and explore bigger emotions like worried, proud and disappointed. You can help your child understand what feelings are and help them understand how and why they happen. Here are some ways you can help.
· Tune into your child’s feelings and emotions
Some emotions are easy to identify, while others are less obvious. Tuning into your child’s emotions involves looking at their body language, listening to what they are saying and observing their behavior. This allows you to respond more effectively to their needs and offer more specific guidance to help them manage their emotions.
· Help them recognize and understand their emotions
Taking opportunities to talk with them and teach them about emotions helps them to become more aware of their emotions as well as those of others. Encouraging them to feel comfortable with their emotions and providing them practice in talking about their feelings helps them further develop ways to manage their emotions.
