CLASS OF 2023 BACCALAUREATE MASS & RIBBON CEREMONY
Eighth graders had their Baccalaureate Mass today. During this Mass, we celebrate our graduates’ connection to St. Viator Parish School with the traditional ribbon ceremony. Our students read aloud to share what ribbons mean to us.
"We've made it! We are graduating soon! Ribbons stream downward and we look at them proudly as a badge won after eight years of hard work. They are a recognition from our school, from our principals, our teachers, our pastor, priests, and brothers that today is our day to be honored. Ribbons are a sign and symbol of celebration! Let us celebrate these ribbons as ties of blue and gold that bind us to St. Viator Parish School, to each other, and to Jesus."
Each member of the St. Viator Parish School Class of 2023 receives this ribbon, which will bind them to the history of this school forever.
We thank staff member Mrs. Janet Santos for making the 8th grade ribbons for the Class of 2023. We thank our students and our families for joining us in the Baccalaureate Mass today, and we thank Father Rinn for presiding in our school's last Mass of the year.
PLEASE READ: GRADUATION DAY EARLY OUT NOTICE
On Friday May 26 PK and Kinder will have graduations during the school day. If your family plans on having an older sibling from grades 1-7 attend either graduation, please keep your child at home with you, and do not send them to school for an early out. Your older child will have an excused absence. With 70 graduates and even more siblings, the school cannot accommodate early outs for that volume of sibling students. It’s disruptive to the classes and overwhelming for the office. Thank you for your understanding.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
One of the things I’ve worked on the most with your students this year has been on “resetting” the day. A reset is when we choose to be proactive about how the rest of our day is going to go after a we have been triggered or upset. I found that most kids believe if one negative thing happens at some point during the day, then the rest of their time on campus is a wrap! They throw the rest of the day away by refusing to engage in their schoolwork, continuing to be rude to their classmates, and feeling as if they are totally out of control of their emotions. I’m not sure how they are when they climb into the car with you at the end of the day, but I’m willing to bet some of this spills over into your evening with them. Am I right? Not an ideal way of beginning a long evening of after school activities, homework, chores, and family time.
So, let’s talk about how to reset with your child (these tips might be useful to you as well. Wink, wink!)
1. Take a deep breath – repeat as many times as needed.
2. Name the feeling – mad, scared, hurt, worried.
3. Notice your surroundings – can they name something they see, feel, hear, smell, or taste?
4. SAY a positive mantra / thought - I am safe, I am loved, I am forgiven, etc.
When we pause, we give our brains a chance to catch up to the emotion we’re feeling and we have tools in our pockets to deal with the feeling instead of reacting to the emotion. I’ve seen these techniques work with your students! The summer vacation would be a perfect time to continue this practice with them – you might benefit from it as well. 😊
Blessings!
Monica

ATTENTION CURRENT 6TH GRADE PARENTS/GUARDIANS!
Students entering 7th Grade next school year (2023-2024) must have been vaccinated against Pertussis, also known as Whooping Cough with the Tetanus, Diphtheria and Acellular Pertussis (Tdap) vaccine; and effective July 1, 2019, against Neisseria meningitidis (meningitis) in the form of a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4). Students not in compliance with the immunization requirements will be excluded from attending school. A flu vaccine is recommended annually for 6 months and older, and 11-12 year olds are also recommended to receive the HPV vaccine.

STELLAR VBS 2023
SUMMER READING & MATH PROGRAM
Dear Parents,
This school year your child has been working very hard and has made lots of progress in his/her reading & math development. We would like to thank you for all the work you have done at home to make this possible. We are very proud to work with your children and you should be proud of them as well. Many times, a child will make a lot of progress during the school year, but when they don’t practice their reading and math facts/skills daily, they regress, and can come back to school in August below grade level. Teachers call this "Summer Slide."
Summer reading & math research affirms that students are best served if they continue their academic development in reading and in practicing math skills daily over the summer. Researchers have found that children who participated in summer programs that included a focus on mathematics tended to score higher on standardized math tests and had higher math class grades than students who did not participate in such programs.
St. Viator will initiate a Summer Reading & Math Program in the summer of 2023 in preparation for the 23-24 school year for all students of incoming grades K-8. Each teacher will communicate the specifics of her required summer assignments. St. Viator will provide most of the materials needed for the Summer Reading & Math Program (students will still need to access books at the library or purchase books). Please look for your child to come home with the Summer Reading & Math Program specifics and materials in the last week of school.
In gratitude,
Mrs. Katie Kiss
