Student Mentoring Opportunity
From ASB and Leadership:
The COHS Student Body and Leadership want all of us to take care of ourselves physically and mentally, especially while we are distance learning.
Every week we will highlight a new topic. This week the students wanted you to focus on staying positive. These are researched and written by the Leadership students and are shared with you here.
Mindfulness Monday Week 3:
How to Reduce Stress Levels:
Stress is a reaction to feeling threatened or anxious. Our bodies’ responses to stress are both natural and adaptive. Here’s a few ways to cope with elevated stress levels:
1.Exercise releases endorphins to make you feel better
2.Slow Breathing lowers blood pressure, relieves muscle tension, and decreases heart rate
3.Diet fruits, veggies, whole grains, and little caffeine helps reduce stress
4.Sleep 8-9 hours is ideal!
5.Talking to Others identifying and expressing emotions helps manage stress
Understanding how stress affects your body can help you react and cope with difficult situations in a healthy way.

Senior Update
If you have not yet watched the senior update, you can access the three videos at the Senior Class webpage:
Yearbook Update
Buying Your Yearbook
If you would like to lock in the lowest price of the year, $60, (the price increases to $75 on Saturday, October 10th) you can do so here:
https://www.jostens.com/apps/store/productBrowse/1722592/Cosumnes-Oaks-High-School/2021-Yearbook/2020082804221888799/CATALOG_SHOP/
When you checkout, you'll see that you have the option to pay in three equal, interest-free payments on your debit card.
Also, when you opt for personalization (an extra $5 to have your student's name embossed on the book) Jostens is offering free icons right now (normally $3 each). This offer expires Saturday, October 10th.
Photo Crowdsourcing -- get your photos in the yearbook!
Fortunately, though, you are there. That's why we've created a Google Form for you to upload photos of what you and your family are up to. We'll be soliciting photos from students through our social media presence, and will share ways to be involved here in Mr. Jauregui's weekly emails, but if you have a photo that illustrates what life is like these days, send it our way (our yearbook design platform can upload .JPG, .TIF, and .PNG formats).
Here's the link to the Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeDGbKcuLD-3GyZ7lf12pQZdiu_vbfKbngmt7pl2DDX5xJSjQ/viewform
Thank you so much!
Here's what you need to know for SENIOR PORTRAITS:
Do I have to take a senior portrait?
Every year, seniors take two photos -- one for the yearbook, and one for their ID card.
We don't know what the picture-day/ID card process will look like for this year yet, but typically seniors do take a picture on picture day, but that picture is only for the purposes of their ID card and attendance.
To have a picture in the yearbook, seniors MUST set up an appointment with Lifetouch/Prestige and take their picture at their studio. Senior year is likely to look different this year, but one way we can hold onto traditions is by setting aside time to take a special portrait that only seniors get to take.
IMPORTANT: If a senior chooses to not have their portrait taken at Prestige, they will NOT be pictured in the yearbook.
Where do I go?
With all the high schools in the county, we're lucky that of Lifetouch's two locations, one is here in Elk Grove: 3159 Dwight Road, suite 300
Who goes to the appointment?
Senior students and one "helper." While the helper is not mandatory, he or she is the only person who will be able to, say, fix the senior's hair, or straighten their collar, or help them to position their shoulders, etc., as the photographers will be socially distancing themselves from students in the interest of everyone's safety.
When do I take my photo?
You'll set up an appointment that works for your schedule, but as with most things, the earlier the better. The Elk Grove studio is scheduled to reopen this week. The DEADLINE to take your senior portrait is February 1st. Their phone number is (916) 393-9950.
What should I wear?
At this time, given concerns about the spread of the Coronavirus, Lifetouch is not providing the typical attire we're accustomed to seeing for senior portraits (what they call "tux and drape"). Instead, seniors will wear semi-formal attire. While it might be disappointing to not have the go-to look of senior portraits, a glass-half-full view of this change would be that students can better express who they are by choosing their own outfits.
Here are some do's and don'ts:
Do's: we still want for senior portraits to feel special, and to stand out from the underclassmen photos, so dress as if you were going to a nice dinner (ha! remember those?) or a fancy event. Dress as your best you. That means a collared shirt (tie optional) or a blouse or dress. Ideally, your top would be solid (as opposed to patterned, but this is not a requirement).*
Don'ts: hats, graphic T-shirts, strapless tops or spaghetti straps (especially important in a picture that is shoulders on up)
*If you buy a package, you can choose what you'd like to wear in the non-yearbook photos you purchase. The above guidelines are for the picture that will appear in the yearbook.
What should I bring?
Bring what will help you look and feel your best (i.e. a comb, make-up, a lint roller, etc.).
Because of cross-contamination concerns, if you'd like to bring a prop like a basketball or an instrument, this year Lifetouch encourages students to bring their own.
Depending on the package you choose, you may bring outfit changes (see cost info below for packages).
How much does it COST?
There is no cost for just a yearbook senior portrait. The trade-off is that the photographer will only take two photos and the lab tech will choose the photo for you. This option isn't listed prominently on the website, but is available; just let them know when you call to schedule your appointment.
The remaining package options -- where you can opt for outfit changes, and choose your own photo from proofs can be found here: https://local.prestigeportraits.com/ca/elk-grove/3159-dwight-rd.html
Hope you're settling into the new school year as best you can!

Attendance Expectations
Students are expected to be in class every school day and logged into their live sessions with their teachers. It is recommended that students log onto their classes a few minutes before the class is supposed to start, to ensure they are ready for learning right at the beginning of class. Students are expected to log onto their live sessions with their camera on so they can participate in the class.
Teachers will take attendance at the beginning of each class period. Students will still be marked as present, late or truant as in a regular school year. If there is a discrepancy with the attendance, please message your child's teacher so they can then communicate with the school's attendance technician.
An auto dialer will call for the previous day's absence. So if a student was marked absent on Monday, then on Tuesday morning, parents/guardians will receive a phone call informing them of the absence.
If your child is absent from their class(es) due to a doctors appointment, sick, out of town, etc. to please contact the office at (916) 683-7670.
