Music Notes with Mrs. Brown
April 2014
Welcome Spring!
And welcome warmer weather! This spring, our K/1 and drama chorus students are working hard to prepare for upcoming music programs. All students are also working to build stronger music skills as they sing, move, listen, play, create, and read in music class. Below are program highlights along with important performance dates as well as what we are learning in music class.
"Music of America" Program: Highlights from Our Fourth and Fifth Grade Show:
Our fourth and fifth grade students did a terrific job in the "Music of America" program. This program featured selections from the styles of folk, rock, and jazz. All pieces were written by American composers. Our show included folk dancing, ukulele, and student created choreography.

What We Are Learning in Music Class
Performing an Ostinato
Third graders perform a repeated rhythm pattern called an ostinato to accompany a song. Students are learning that an ostinato can be found in many different pieces of music.
Creating Movement & Singing
Third graders performed a song "The Wind." This song is a poem about the mysteriousness of wind. Students created movements using scarves and sang the song with ostinato instrument accompaniment.
Folk Dancing with Partners
Second graders performed the folk dance "Rocky Mountain." The song message is that even when you're having a bad day, there's always a friend to help. Students learned that music is composed with large sections. This is called form. The song "Rocky Mountain" has 2 large sections. This song has an AB form.
