Panther Nation September 2019
From The Desk of the MS/HS Office
Off To A Great Start
The new school year is finally off and running. We are almost a month into the 2019-2020 school year and amazing things are happening at MCE! We started with 6th Grade Orientation and Meet The Teacher Night and have now begun Fall Athletic Contests. The academic process has begun and each student is settling into their routine for how they learn best. If you ever are in need of assistance for your student, or are needing to contact your child's teacher, please feel free to contact the office and we will get you in touch with the right person.
Please look through this month's newsletter for highlights of the past month and for upcoming events throughout September. As always, It's A Great Day To Be A Panther!

Middle School students (grades 6-8) are completing their initial benchmark testing in the NWEA system. Your students should be receiving their results to be sent home soon. With these results, all middle school students will receive individualized attention as to their strengths and weaknesses. These results will be uploaded into a tracking program called Study Island. Each student will have the opportunity to earn blue ribbons for the growth they show through the study island system based upon their NWEA benchmarking score. They will test again in December to demonstrate their progress.

Meet Our New Director of Student Services
Mr. Brent Dunning
"I came to Marion C. Early with twelve years of experience. Nine of them teaching special education and three as a building principal. I came here with great excitement, too, as my wife worked here for eight years and I was familiar with the greatness that exists in this school and community. I am beyond excited to be the Director of Student Services and to be involved in special education again. The transition here has been amazing as it feels like I am coming home. The school and staff have welcomed me with open arms and I am thrilled to see all of the amazing things that are going to take place here in the coming months and years."
High School Panther Time
What is Panther Time?
Panther Time is an opportunity for students to seek help from a teacher, work on assignments and homework, work in small intervention groups or independently read. Students will be with their Panther Time teachers during the last 25 minutes of the day. They will be placed with one of their regular classroom teachers. Direct interventions will be conducted on Wednesdays and Thursdays through Study Island while independent study will be conducted on Tuesdays. Fridays will be utilized for club and class meetings.
What is required of students during Panther Time?
During Panther Time, students will either be: 1) Getting help from a teacher; 2) Working quietly on homework; or 3) Reading independently.
For the past four years, the Marion C. Early Middle & High School has implemented the Project Lead The Way Engineering Track with training by the Missouri University of Science & Technology (Missouri S & T). Students who complete the PLTW Engineering Track at MCE can qualify for college credit toward graduation at S & T. We are the only school in Polk County to offer this program.
Through an engaging, hands-on curriculum, PLTW encourages the development of problem-solving skills, critical thinking, creative and innovative reasoning, and a love of learning. PLTW sparks the ingenuity, creativity, and innovation that are within all of our students.
Gateway Engineering classes are offered in 7th and 8th grade. When a student enters High School, they may enroll in Introduction to Engineering, Principles of Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. Principles and Aerospace both satisfy two of the three science credits needed to graduate while Introduction to Engineering satisfies an elective credit. All classes are taught by PLTW Certified Teacher Mr. Zac Frantsen.
With the PLTW Program, we have a hands on lab for student interaction and learning. The PLTW Lab houses a state of the art Maker Bot 3D Printer, the Structural Stress Analyzer 1000, the JetStream 500 Wind Tunnel, and numerous software programs and materials to code and construct items such as 3D models, airplanes, and robots. Below this article you will find some pictures of the PLTW Lab.

Yearbook Team
On Wednesday, August 28, the yearbook team headed to Bolivar High School for the annual yearbook workshop hosted by Jostens. At the workshop, students took part in discussions and team building activities to improve staff chemistry. They also joined forces with other schools and were able to bounce ideas off of each other. The yearbook team had the opportunity to listen to an award winning yearbook advisor as well as other experts. Finally, the staff worked with a professional artist to design the cover of the 2020 yearbook. This year's team learned a lot and is ready to make this year's book the best ever! The MCE Yearbook Team faculty sponsor is Mr. Brandon Martinsen.
STUCO Leadership
On Thursday, August 29th, the MCE STUCO Executive Team went to officer training day at Strafford and it was a success! They had the opportunity to hear motivational speaker Kyle Scheele talk about the true meaning of student council as well as discuss our current situations and ways to improve. After the training session, we treated ourselves to Andy's Frozen Custard where we had a slight debriefing, followup discussion about our ideas, and bonded over delicious custard. They came home with new propositions and great motivation to do more. We are very excited for this upcoming year of Student Council. The MCE STUCO faculty sponsor is Mrs. Shannon Wodmansee.
