Attitude of Gratitude
Dear Parents and/or Guardians,
November is here! It is a great time to practice an Attitude of Gratitude!
Do you have a moment to send a quick thank you note, tweet or email to a staff member at Lewiston-Porter Intermediate Education Center?
Expressing gratitude can fill your cup and our staff member’s cup. Positive connections between home and school foster mutual respect, in turn creating a rich learning environment. If you’re interested in sharing a quick thank you with someone that is having a positive impact on your child, please go to the @LewPortIEC and tweet a special message to your child’s classroom teacher. We are all a“twitter” about great staff at the IEC.

THANK YOU, PARENTS!
I want to thank you for your continued support and partnership as we navigate this dynamic, but different time in our children’s lives! Your work in providing a safe and caring environment nurtures the educational success of your child. This provides a solid platform for us to build on! We appreciate your hard work and commitment to our work together. This creates a team of support for your child(ren) that allows great learning to happen academically, socially, and emotionally. Thank you for your ongoing support!
It has been a great start to our year. The students and staff have been working diligently to implement daily routines and academic success for all children. Congratulations to our October Lancer Gram honorees! I am so proud of all your hard work and respectful devotion to our school. This behavior promotes a positive social, emotional and developmental environment for all our students. Through the Leader in Me Character Program and the building’s IEC leadership skills, our school is becoming a better place to learn.
We are coming upon the conclusion of our first trimester, so please be on the lookout for information from your classroom teacher regarding Parent-Teacher Conferences. Parent-Teacher conferences have long been valued as a most effective means of reporting individual pupil progress. The parent teacher conference allows parents and teachers to review the academic achievement, where all educational inquiries can be addressed to support the optimal growth of each child.
Please join Twitter @LewPortIEC to find more information on school events and happenings throughout the day.
Sincerely,
Tina Rodriguez,
IEC Principal
Halloween at the IEC
Drama Club
We have a brand new club at the IEC this year. Students in 4th and 5th grade have the opportunity to be in the Drama Club. Students in this club will eventually be part of the IEC School Musical starting in January. There are 45 students in the club, and we are excited to get started. Miss Yager, Mrs, Zachary, and Mrs. Jaruszewski are the teacher coordinators.
Elements of the Club:
Learning about the history and culture of theatre
How to create an ensemble (collaboration, building trust)
Movement and Space - how to act out moods and tell stories, choreography and interpretation
Character Development - exploring characters, their traits, expressions, backgrounds, and how to create
Objectives and Tactics - teaching student to think about the “why” or purpose behind the actions
Voice - articulation, projection, voice variation, expression
Listening and Reacting - students will understand how to be present, and how listening to others and reacting (communication) are important skills for an actor.
Musical expression - Students will learn about expressive tools (tone, articulation, dynamics, and phrasing), visual and listening skills, and storytelling through music. They will see how music helps set the scene, tell a story, and communicates moods, feelings, and emotions.
Stage directions, elements, and blocking - how to stage a scene
We had our first meeting on Wednesday, October 27th. Students were asked to think about who they were as a person in terms of what characters and styles of acting fit them currently. They also set goals and tried to find their purpose of being part of the club. There were acting exercises, and students also had the opportunity to learn and practice some improvisation skills. It was wonderful to see students begin to come out of their shell, and for some to begin honing their skills. Look out Broadway, here we come!

IEC Enrichment with Mr. Frederick
Hello ! My Name is Mr. Frederick and I am very excited to be the IEC’s new Enrichment teacher for the 2021-2022 school year. Many of you may know me from my previous position as a Fifth Grade teacher at our school. I always wanted to teach an Enrichment class and I’m very excited to get this opportunity. Having taught fifth grade for many years, I feel I have a lot of experience that I can offer the students. This year I hope to foster my students’ natural curiosity and love of learning by guiding them to go above and beyond what they already learn in the general classroom setting. Above all else, I want all my students to have fun!
This fall, various students have built and modified a “Rubber Band Powered Car” using scientific principles and data, have learned how to play Chess, and have graphed a Buffalo Bills Logo using coordinate graphing techniques, as well as completed mini-research projects - among other activities. I post updates and pictures weekly on my School SeeSaw page. Parents and families, If you have any questions about the program, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at pfrederick@lew-port.com or 754-8281 ext 3205. Thank you. ~Mr. Frederick

Global Monsters in the IEC 3rd grade STEAM Lab By: Mrs. Heidi Kazulak NBCT
All third grade STEAM students have been working on the creation of their Global Monster. This project has allowed students to engineer monster parts based on descriptions provided by students from around the world. In order to participate each class had to design one part of the monster. These descriptions were then shared out to every participating class around the world. We have classes participating from Canada, Italy, Nigeria, Serbia, and of course many other states across the US such as; New Mexico, Louisiana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, Illinois, Georgia, Florida, and Arkansas.
It has been a wonderful learning experience where students have learned to collaborate, investigate, communicate and problem solve as they are building the monster.
This project has also given us the opportunity to learn about the United Nations and how they too set goals. We learned about the 17 sustainable development goals that were set by the United Nations and how we ourselves can help make this world a better place. We can’t wait to see what our completed monster will look like. Stay tuned!
IEC Music Leaders of the Month
Each month, one student from Band, Orchestra, and General Music will be chosen as a Music Leader of the Month. These students demonstrate the 3 R’s (Responsibility, Respect and Resourcefulness) in these classes.
For the month of October, the following students have been chosen by Mrs. Spinnegan, Mrs. Zachary(Mrs. Gorney) and Mrs. Carere:
Band - Brady Tierney
Orchestra - Alyssa Cardamone
General Music - Liam Suitor

Expanding our Horizons Through Literature in the IEC Library By Mrs. H. Kazulak NBCT
The library has been a busy place as students are learning to become more independent when selecting their books during their library time. They are learning how the library is set up both alphabetically and numerically following the Dewey Decimal System. Students are learning how to use Destiny to help them select books at their reading level as well considering what interests them. Please note that students may be checking out books that are above or below their reading levels as well. It is my goal to have my students sample a variety of genres throughout the year to expand their reading experience and to encourage a love of
reading.
All grade levels are currently participating in The Global Read Aloud. My third and fourth grade students are reading Dragons in a Bag by Zetta Elliott. It is an Urban fantasy story based in Brooklyn,NYC. It introduces students to the culture of the streets of Brooklyn, the culture of Madagascar, and the magic of a fantastical world. There are approximately 125 other classes throughout the world reading this book as well. We are using the app Padlet to connect with these other classes to share our responses to this delightful story. We have also met several of these classes through Google Meet. We have visited with students from Rhode Island and from Israel! We hope to keep these connections going throughout the year. We are also participating in weekly Kahoot challenges with these classes! Here are where other classes are from:
Playing Dragons in A Bag Kahoot:
Fifth grade is reading the Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste for Global Read Aloud. This is also a fantasy and is set on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. The cultures and traditions of these islands are woven throughout the novel. Students are participating with approximately 115 other classes who are also reading this novel. We are making connections using Padlet as we respond to a variety of questions around the novel. Seeing other student responses from across the globe have raised interesting questions as to why people from different places may read the same book but see and interpret things very differently.
