Celebrate Questioning
The first step in using the questioning strategy effectively within instruction, is to....wait for it...plan for it! That's right, if questioning is isn't planned for, it's likely it'll be done "on the fly" usually resulting in lesser quality. What else should be considered? The purpose for which it's used, of course. Check out the video posted within the link below provided by Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership. Following the introduction and initial instruction of a concept (about halfway through the video) the teacher circulates to check in on student learning. Consider the following as you near this part of the video:
- What kinds of Qs does the teacher ask Ss?
- What are some of the reasons/purposes the teacher asked those kinds of Qs?
- What are some of the reasons why the teacher may have planned for these kinds of Qs during this part of the lesson?
- What did the teacher learn about his Ss as a result of the Qs asked?
- What are some of the areas within your next lesson do you anticipate pausing and asking Qs for the purpose of wanting feedback on S learning?
Plan away Pirates! Arrrgh you ready for questions?! Arrrgh!
