Mathews Weekly
Week of October 2, 2017
From Grace
Good afternoon, Wonderful Mathews Community! I hope the first day of October finds everyone well and happy. Today is Mathews Day at the Austin Pizza Garden! Simply mention you're from Mathews and APG will donate 15% to our hard-working PTA - wow! Mathews families will be gathering around 5:00 pm. Good food, better company, and supporting Mathews all rolled into one fun event - what could be better?
Octoberama, another super fun family event is right around the corner! The big bash is on October 28th from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm. Every year I'm blown away by the amazing activities, games, food, and fun the organizing committee puts together. Octoberama is not to be missed! Check out the section below with links to website, including our first ever online silent auction which is now live. Super exciting!
In other news, we are almost through the first quarter of school, which is hard to believe. There are three more weeks in this quarter - please encourage your child to make the most of them! If you have any questions about your child's progress, nestled within these three weeks are parent/teacher conferences. The official day for the conferences is October 9th, a student holiday from school. As I've mentioned before, this is a helpful way to visit with your child's teacher(s) and learn about how he/she is doing in school. Please be on the lookout for information to sign up for conferences from your child's teacher.
Speaking of important things, school attendance is critical to student learning. Unless your child is ill, please ensure to not only bring him/her to school, but to do so on time. When students are late, they miss opening routines in the classroom and have a disrupted start to their day and, in some cases, their classmates. I know how challenging an early get-up can be for everyone, but ask that you make every effort to to arrive in time for your child to be in the classroom by 7:45 am. Thank you!
This week we'll have a shelter in place drill. Unlike a fire drill, there are not alarms, but an announcement. The purpose of this drill is to practice how to get to the safest location at school in the event of either an environmental hazard or a severe weather event like a tornado. We'll be practicing the severe weather scenario and moving all students inside the main building. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the drill.
Finally, if you happen to have any gently used clothing, particularly in preK-2nd grade sizes, we could use some in the office. We need shorts, shirts, pants, and unused underwear for both boys and girls. Donations may be dropped off in the large wooden box in the main hallway. Thank you!
Here's to another lovely week full of discovery and learning. Enjoy the rest of your day and we'll see everyone in the morning.
*If you happen to know of a family who isn't getting these weekly email messages, please let them know they can opt in to messages in the parent cloud at: my.austinsid.org
