Dear ASD Families:

Welcome to 2018-2019!

It's exciting to see our students and families, as we prepare for the new school year. I particularly enjoyed watching visitors take in the new high school during Seahawk Start Up this week. In chatting with students and parents, everyone seemed truly excited. I kept hearing students say: "It feels like a college," while many adults were heard commenting, "It makes me want to go back to high school."

We realize this is a tremendous community investment, and we want to express our deep gratitude. It will make a tremendous difference in the lives of our high school students. Put September 28 on your calendar, as we will have a ribbon cutting and ice cream social from 4-5:30. It's also Homecoming Day.

Next Thursday is a big day for us as we welcome back students to school. Then kindergartners will join us on September 11 for their brand-new experience. Go get 'em, Class of 2031!

Our vision in ASD is that students reach their fullest potential, embrace the future and make a difference. We can't wait to partner with you to bring those words to life in making this the best year ever for our students and families.

Sincerely,

Superintendent Mark Wenzel

Start of school signals traffic to slow down

Anacortes Schools start on Thursday, September 6, and we would like to urge drivers to slow down and watch for pedestrians, especially in school zones. School zones can be particularly busy, especially before and after school. Drivers are reminded to share the road with pedestrians, school buses, and bicyclists. The speed limit in school zones is 20 MPH.

The area around the high school remains a construction site as we move into phase III of the project – remodeling of Brodniak Hall and the gym, and construction of a new Career and Technical Education, drama and music wing. Please be mindful of construction vehicles and changing road conditions as we work to finish the project.

The National Safety Council (www.nsc.org) offers a number of good tips for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. We urge everyone out there to be safe and follow the rules of the road.

AHS Ribbon Cutting & Ice Cream Social

Join us for a ribbon-cutting ceremony & ice cream social to celebrate the opening of the new Anacortes High School!

Friday, September 28 from 4-5:30 p.m.

Thanks to our project partners FORMA Construction and Hutteball & Oremus Architecture!

District updates phone system; new numbers

The school district recently updated its antiquated phone system, resulting in new phone numbers across the district. One advantage of the new system is a consistent prefix (503) for all district phone numbers and more predictive main numbers.

New phone numbers are:

  • District Office: (360) 503-1200
  • Anacortes High School: (360) 503-1300
  • Anacortes Middle School: (360) 503-1230
  • Fidalgo Elementary School: (360) 503-1600
  • Island View Elementary School: (360) 503-1400
  • Mt Erie Elementary School: (360) 503-1500
  • Whitney Early Childhood Education Center: (360) 503-1550
  • Transportation: (360) 503-1155

This new phone system is part of several communications improvements the district is rolling out this year, to allow us to better serve our customers and communicate more efficiently.
