April 2020 Newsletter
Dear SLHS Families,
As we approach the third week of remote learning, we hope your families are healthy, safe and trying to find a routine. Everyday seems to have more questions than answers, but we need to inform everyone with the most current information we have. The SLHS Staffulty are impressed with students responses, much of that is due to our supportive families. We want to thank all of you for your feedback, suggestions and support.
Happy Social Worker Week Mrs. D-W!

Spring Break - Tri-Lakes Trifecta
Governor Cuomo's executive order extending school closure for an additional two weeks includes language that requires school districts to continue to provide remote instruction and meals to students as well as childcare for essential workers every weekday through April 14 in order to receive a waiver from the 180-day instructional requirement – even if they had been scheduled to be on spring break during that time.
The District is following the Governor’s mandate by launching a new, student-interest centered learning experience for students as well as a new meal distribution system for the two-week period that was originally set aside as spring break (April 6 – April 17).
Students are challenged to complete the Tri-Lakes Trifecta. That is, “scale the peaks” of 18 academic and physical activities/tasks. Students will receive a Mountain Choice Sheet and Tri-Lakes Trifecta Scratch-off card in the mail early next week (being mailed to your home on Friday).
Each mountain heads a column of activities. Students choose one activity in each column to complete. Once the activity is complete, the student scratches off that mountain top from the scratch-off card. Teachers will be available during daily office hours (8 am to 10 am) to provide instruction and answer any questions. Students who conquer the Tri-Lakes Trifecta by completing one activity from each column become eligible to win prizes (gift certificates purchased at local stores). Please look for more detailed information in the packet of materials when it arrives.
Remote Learning Expectations
Scholarships
The deadline for scholarship applications was extended to Friday, May 1st. However, the Deo Colburn applications must be turned in on Monday. April 27th. Scholarship descriptions, applications and the SIS form are posted on the SLHS website. If you have questions, please email Mrs. Bell, Mr. Simmons or Mrs. Schwartz. The collection process hasn't been established yet, but we will keep you informed.
Junior Prom
AP Exams
You may have heard the news from the College Board, that the AP exams in May are still on. Here are some changes and things you need to know:
- Exams will be only 45 minutes long (vs. 3 hours normally).
- No multiple choice! The exam will be entirely comprised of free response questions (FRQs).
- Exams will NOT include any content typically covered after early March.
- Exams can be taken online.
- 2 exam dates: One will be in May and one later (TBD). Students can decide if they want to test while the material is fresh OR wait to give themselves extra study time.
- Colleges say they are on board with this exam approach, and there’s precedent for them accepting shorter exams in emergencies.
We will know more information on Friday, April 3rd when we will hear from the College Board again.
Paraprofessional Appreciation Day
On April 1st, we honor and recognize our paraprofessional educators, who may also be known as teaching assistants or teacher's aides. Paraprofessionals perform a variety of teacher-related jobs and assist students in and out of the classroom. Thank you to the following paraprofessionals at the HS: Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Ash, Mr. Carpenter, Ms. Cotter, Mrs. McCabe, Mrs. Munn, Mr. O’Brien, Mrs. Olsen, Mrs. Simkins, Mrs. Toishi, Mrs. Viscardo, Mrs. Wood & Mrs. Yousey. You are so appreciated.
Administrative Professionals Day
I know this is a lot of information, but I felt I needed to get it out to you. In these times of uncertainty, I encourage you to keep things simple and take care of each other. If we can help in anyway, please don't hesitate to contact us. We are here to help.
Thank you and stay healthy,
Joshua Dann, Principal
