Your news source for Mansfield High School
From the Principal's Desk...
June 18, 2020
Hi All,
Here are updates for this FINAL newsletter for the school year!
Final report cards will be mailed home next week. As a reminder, grades were based on an average of quarters 1, 2, and 3. Please see the MPS COVID-19 site ("MHS resources") for an explanation of the P/F grading system. Remember that the "P" or "F " earned Q4 will not appear on transcripts (only the final course average will appear on transcripts).
If your child lost credit during the remote learning period and you feel there was an extenuating circumstance, please submit an attendance appeal form for consideration. If your child lost five credits or more, they may be eligible for summer school.
Attendance appeal forms are available online at: http://mansfieldhs.ss8.sharpschool.com/departments/guidance/printable_forms_for_students_and_parents
- Come pick up your awards! Our final drive thru pick up of the school year will take place on Tuesday, June 23rd from 9AM-2PM for any student who received an award in one of our digital celebrations (Athletic Awards, Class Day, Underclass Awards). Please find the schedule below (organized alpha by last name group). In addition, if you were unable to attend your assigned locker pick up/drop off day, are you welcome to swing on Tuesday as well, anytime from 9-2.
- The District Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee convened for a 2nd meeting yesterday (Wednesday), and will convene a 3rd time this coming week. We have so far created a shared, over-arching set of questions to guide each school's planning for the possibility of remote learning for next school year, and will now continue to develop the plans in school-based groups.
- Many thanks to all students who attend our student virtual forum on Tuesday! Over 40 students participated with teachers from each department listening in- the feedback was incredibly helpful and very constructive!
- Finally, we encourage parents/guardians and students to complete the surveys sent to you regarding remote learning. The parent/guardian survey was sent out earlier this week from Central Office and the Student Survey I sent to students grades 9-11 yesterday.
All communication will remain housed on the MPS COVID-19 website (click on “School Resources” side tab, and then on “Mansfield High School”) so that you can locate it easily.
On a personal note, I can't thank the Mansfield community enough for the outpouring of support these last few months- it's been appreciated more than you know. Also, please be sure to give yourselves a pat on the back. Remote learning on the home front, plus managing all of the demands of work and living has been no easy task these last few months! I want to acknowledge all of your efforts in educating our students.
Thank you again- have a safe, healthy and restful summer!
Best regards,
Mary Watkins

AP Summer Work
We’re in the final stages of building the schedule for next year!
Since our goal is to be able to mail out course confirmations during the week of July 6th, students enrolled in AP courses will hear from department chairs regarding any expectations for summer work in the days following.
Please note that all AP Psychology, US History, European History, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Computer Science, and Statistics will not have summer work requirements.
Summer Reading 2020
As we enter the summer months, one of the best ways for students to remain engaged and to increase academic success in the fall, perhaps this year more than ever, is to participate in summer reading. This year’s program provides a list of suggested titles for students in grades 9 through 12. Students who participate in the program will have an opportunity to receive an additional point on their term one grade by completing an optional summer reading assignment on one of the recommended books.
We have collaborated with the Mansfield Public Library to ensure that as many summer reading options as possible are available as eBooks. Even if students don’t have a library card, they can access eBooks through the Sora App by logging in with their Mansfield Public Schools Google credentials. Instructions for accessing through Sora will be posted shortly on the MHS home page.
Please find all the information you need regarding summer reading here!
Fall Sports Registration
2020 Fall Sports Athletic Registration
On-line registration for Fall Sports will begin on Monday, June 1st and this is
required of all student-athletes interested in participating in fall sports. Registration
must be completed by Friday, June 19th so we can confirm your son/daughter's
eligibility for the fall season. Please find the registration link on the Athletics homepage on Monday June 1st.
In addition to the on-line registration, student-athletes must also have a valid physical on
file with the athletic department. Physicals are valid for 13 months from the time of the
physical and then must be renewed for the athlete to continue participation. Please make
sure to schedule an appointment as soon as possible if your regular appointment was
postponed due to the Covid-19 restrictions. Parents should send a hard copy of their
child's most recent physical to Carrie Ciccarelli, c/o Mansfield HS, Mansfield, MA or
scan a copy and e-mail to: carrie.ciccarelli@mansfieldschools.com
Student-athletes must also complete an IMPACT test every two years to be eligible to
compete in interscholastic competition. The athletic department is working on an on-line
"at home" option for the Impact Test and more information will be provided if that option replaces the old format of testing at MHS. If that option is not available, then IMPACT testing dates have been scheduled for the week of August 17th-exact times/dates TBA. Most of the testing will be for incoming freshmen and juniors (and sophomores/seniors who did not take the test last year). This test is very important as it is used in the "return to play" protocol used by our training staff after a student suffers any type of head injury.
Finally, the collection of user fees has been adjusted for the upcoming school year. User
fees will be collected AFTER team selection, rather than before tryouts. Once the team
selection process has been finalized by August 29th, parents can pay the user fee on-line
with a deadline of September 2nd. Student-athletes who qualify for free or reduced lunch can contact the athletic department directly for a waiver or reduction of athletic user fees.
** For current high school students
Academic eligibility for the fall season is based on total credits earned during the previous
academic year. Once you have registered with the athletic department and report cards have
been issued, we will check your academic eligibility. Please remember that credit reduction
due to unexcused absences will impact eligibility so students should complete an attendance
waiver to restore credits in the case of excused absences. With the school release on
Friday, March 13th this issue of attendance/credit reduction should be minimized this year.
If you have any questions about this process for preparing your son/daughter for athletic
participation in the fall, please feel free to reach out to:
