Language Arts and Writing
Last week we finished our second class chapter book, Fantastic Mr. Fox, by Roald Dahl. The students loved this book and the rich characters. We practiced our 'Reading is Thinking' throughout, asking ourselves questions like, I wonder what would have happened if ... Why did the farmers think...? We wrapped things up by making a beginning, middle, end story map and illustrations. Stay tuned to find out what our next book will be...
This week we will finish looking at different leads for stories. We will try dialogue, sound words, questions, thoughts and feelings, and setting leads. We will then begin working on elaborative details. We will look at using questions to draw out details. Look for our creative and detailed monster writings just in time for Halloween.
Math
We are in the middle of Chapter 2. The Math In Focus newsletter sent home can provide you with vocabulary and concepts presented. I also sent home a Parent Guide last week that broke down subtraction strategies. It is a good idea to keep these letters in a folder for future reference.
This week I will be sending home a practice packet for addition with regrouping. It very nicely shows how to use base-10 blocks to build the numbers, then regroup as needed.
