The Second Grade Scoop
March 3rd. 2017
Hello Second Grade Families,
What a fun Read Across America week for 2R! On Monday, our class had their first opportunity to visit the book fair. On Tuesday, our class practiced reading with expression during our Reader's Theater version (similar to a play) of Jan Brett's story, The Hat. On Thursday, we wore our pajamas to school to help us get cozy with a good book during the Tatem Hallway Reading Chain. We read for a whole 15 minutes in the hallway! After the hallway read, we came back into the classroom for a "book tasting" in 2R's Reader Cafe. Students had the opportunity to get a taste of a wide variety of genres. On Friday, we participated in the first ever Tatem Book Swap. What an exciting week full of reading! I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Math
At home, please continue to...
- Double-check students' answers on problems that involve number stories.
- Practice basic addition and subtraction math facts.
- Practice telling time using an analog clock. Students have learned how to tell time to the minute so it is just a matter of requiring them to do so.
- Involve your child in checking that you got the right change from the cashier.
- Ask your child to give you a ballpark estimate to check their work with 2-digit addition.
- Pose one or two step number stories to your child.
- Check out Number Grid Difference on the Everyday Math website.
Reader's Workshop
Writer's Workshop
In our Writing About Reading unit, students have been working hard to tell their opinions on different books they have read. This week, students learned how to plan and write about more than one part of the book. They also learned to use linking words to link their opinion with their reasoning.

Order Due Date - Saturday, March 25th
Thank you to everyone who participated in the February purchase. Because of your orders, we earned 20 free books for our classroom! All books were handed out on Friday so if yours did not make it home, they are probably in your child's book bin.
March catalogues went home on Friday as well. Please take a few moments to explore the selection together and let your child help choose books he or she is excited to read. For a wide selection of quality children's books that are just right for your child's reading level, please order online at scholastic.com/readingclub.
If our class places $50 worth of orders all together, we will earn $10 in free books. With each order placed, our class also earns bonus points that I can then use to purchase more books for the classroom or even other materials like math manipulative for the classroom. It is a great program to get involved in. Thank you for supporting your child’s reading both at home and in the classroom!
