Wanamaker Library Newsletter
February 2023
It's Book Fair Time!
The theme this year is "Feelin' Groovy!" The students will preview the fair during library classes and create their wish lists. If you're looking for a valentine treat for your students or maybe a new book for them to read on their days off for P-T conferences, please come and check out the fair!
Shopping online is also an option for families from Feb. 10 - 23. Families now have access to the Scholastic Store where thousands of best-selling books, collections, new releases, educational toys, games and more can be purchased. All online orders will be shipped to your home!
Another option is the availability of a student eWallet. It's a digital payment option for students and a way for parents to go cash-free!
The proceeds from the fair are used to buy books and other supplies for our library. We are excited to see you during book fair week!
Click below to view the book fair hours, sign up to volunteer, learn about the eWallet option, download the book fair app, or to shop online.
Pets Caught Reading!
The best part for the library staff was getting to hear all about the students' pets--what their names are, how old they are, how ornery they are, and what it took to "catch them reading"! It sounds like lots of treats and catnip was needed to get the photo!
Adults in the building were invited to judge the competition, and they reported it was extremely difficult to narrow down the entries. The creativity involved in the positioning of the pets and the book choices was amazing!
The winners received a treat for their pet and a $5 McDonald's gift card for the student. All participants will receive a small treat and a coupon for a free cookie or brownie at Chik-fil-A. Thank you to Chik-fil-A for donating the coupons!
The competition was a fun way to put a little spice into the month of January!

Who I Am as a Reader
We also discussed ways to help them find literature that interests them and ways to incorporate more reading time into their day.
To conclude the unit the students wrote their Who I Am as a Reader lists on thumbprint templates and proudly displayed them in the hallway (see above picture)!
GUNG HAY FAT CHOY! HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!
Gung hay fat choy is how Cantonese speakers wish you a happy new year--literally "wishing you great happiness and prosperity." Chinese New Year, often called the Spring Festival, is the most important holiday in China and Chinese communities around the world.
The Chinese New Year 2023 will fall on January 22, and the festival will last to February 5, about 15 days in total. 2023 is a Year of the Rabbit, according to Chinese zodiac. The rabbit is the symbol of longevity, peace, and prosperity in Chinese culture, thus 2023 is predicted to be a year of hope.
The Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade students will learn about the Chinese New Year in their library classes this month. We will read fiction (The Runaway Wok: A Chinese New Year Tale) and non-fiction (Celebrating Chinese New Year) books about the festival and the many customs and activities associated with the festival.
The students will get to try a fortune cookie after our lesson (courtesy of Oriental Express Restaurant), and they will leave class with a Chinese New Year sticker and a Year of the Rabbit coloring sheet.
The above information was taken from the following website. It is a great site to visit if you or your child would like to learn more about the Chinese New Year!

Student Council Spreads Holiday Cheer
In addition to caroling, the students also distributed snowman ornaments that they made especially for the residents to enjoy throughout the winter months.
The proceeds from the Boo Grams that the Student Council members sold to Wanamaker students the week of Halloween go towards charitable organizations each year. This year the Student Council members decided to donate the Boo Gram proceeds to The Villages, Inc. The Villages is a group home for youth who cannot live at home for various reasons. These donations were presented by the Student Council at the holiday assembly held on Dec. 16. Student Council sponsors are Mrs. Slimmer, Mrs. Reinert, and Mrs. Stephenson.
