Pirate Points from Mrs. Lee's Class

Week of August 28, 2013

Some Reminders for Our Class

*Send a small snack each day.

*Wear sneakers on Mondays and Tuesdays for PE.

*Make sure all money is in a labeled baggie with your child's name.

*Changes of transportation must be made in writing.

First graders will bring home math homework on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please check over your child's work and let me know if he/she struggles.

Guided Reading

We are beginning Guided Reading today! Each child will be part of a flexible, guided reading group daily. During this time, we will do some word work, read a leveled text, and guided writing. Your child will bring a reading bag home each night Monday-Thursday. You need to listen to your child read, practice the sight words on the grid in the folder, sign the reading log, and return to school daily. This is daily homework and must be done consistently to have success in reading. It will take a few weeks for me to get the best instructional level for each group, so some books may be a little too hard or easy at first. Feel free to leave comments on the reading log to let me know how your child does with the book.

Math...the new way!

Our district has adopted a new, research-based math series that aligns with the national Common Core standards. Please read and print the attached parent letter to see what we are learning during this first unit. There are goals and examples listed. Try to incorporate some of these math skills at home in your everyday routines.

Shoe Tying Practice

Thanks for practicing at home! I've had several kids that can tie their shoes now. We will have our Shoe Tying Party at the end of September...so keep working!

What We Are Learning

We are really focusing on procedures and routines the first few weeks to make sure our classroom runs smoothly this year. Specific standards and skills will be listed beginning in next week's Pirate Points.

Classroom Needs

We are in need of various stickers in our class. In writing center, students will be creating a Sticker Story. They will use stickers to create a picture that will prompt their writing. We would love some character stickers, vehicles, food, animals...or any cool stickers. If you are able, please send some in. Thanks for your help!
