We finished up pronouns this week and will take the quiz Monday. Doing the practice problems and going on noredink.com really helps them prepare for the quiz. Next week, we will start taking notes on the writing process to help improve and strengthen their writing skills.
They will have their first lit. circle meeting with their group on Monday. Here they will discuss the book so far and go over their task worksheets. Each person had a different worksheet to complete. Then they will meet again next Monday to discuss the next section of their book. The whole book should be finished by January 31st, which is when they will have their last group meeting.
The 6th graders also started doing Rti centers on Thursdays. Mrs. Rivest, our Rti specialist, comes in and guides the students through each activity. These activities focus on reading comprehension, critical thinking, character traits and literal and inferential learning strategies. They seem to enjoy it and I can’t wait to see the benefits in a few weeks!
Enjoy the weekend!

This week in Math, the sixth graders learned how to calculate tax, tip and discount by finding percent of a number and then either adding it or subtracting it to the total amount. Have your son or daughter calculate the tax or tip while shopping or out to eat!
Next week we will continue with Module 8 by using proportions to solve problems with percents. We will also take the Module 8 Quiz. We will be MAPS testing on Tuesday.
Mid trimester progress reports went home this week. Please send them back signed.
Have a great weekend!

This week students worked in small groups on a Chapter 3 project. They acted as land surveyors, looking for the best place to locate the new settlement Jamestown. The groups were each assigned a region on the east coast, from Manhattan Island, New York to Charleston, South Carolina.
They had to research natural resources, geography, accessibility, and climate of their assigned area. As a group they created a google slide presentation. Next week they will present their findings to the rest of the class. We will act as the colonists looking for the best place to live in the new world as the groups try to sell their location as the best place to build Jamestown.
I am working on grading essay questions and finishing final grades for the Chapter 3 test. I hope to have those grades in Skyward by the beginning of next week.
Please contact me via e-mail if you have any specific questions or concerns. Have a great weekend

This week the sixth graders continued on with the Fitnessgram Winter Test Session. On Tuesday we tested their muscular strength and endurance with the push-up test, on Wednesday we tested their flexibility with the sit and reach, and on Thursday, cardiovascular endurance with the pacer test. While the students were not testing they increased their cardiovascular endurance by playing full court basketball, volleyball, and prison ball.
Have a wonderful weekend!

This week and next week, sixth grade students are working on adding VALUE to their mannequin drawings with oil crayons. Blending many values from dark to light will give the mannequins the illusion of being three-dimensional.
