Are you thinking like an Entrepreneur
Starting and running and business is not for everyone. However for those who choose to become an entrepreneur, there are some key points to consider.
I am often approached, whereby someone will outline to me their business idea and how they plan to make their fortunes, or change their way of life.
I am a firm supporter of ‘give it a go’, but I am also a firm realist and 15 years of providing training and consultancy services, running my own business, reinforces this.
The one piece of feedback I always give, is ‘are you prepared for the journey’.
The key to success is to start to think like a business person, an entrepreneur. Replicate and copy the same skills, activities and mindset that these unique people have.
ü Research – as with anything, research is vital. Do not allow yourself to suffer from ‘analysis paralysis’ however carry out a robust degree of research and market analysis to allow your idea the best chance of survival.
ü Be Passionate – people are hugely passionate about their favourite team or celebrity, yet often in business they are less than luke warm about their business or workplace. To be a true entrepreneur the sun always needs to shine and despite many dark moments, keep plugging away.
ü Embrace risk – I cannot think of a true entrepreneurial example of success that did not have a degree of risk involved; financially, personally, commercially, and so on. Risk can lead to reward but it can also lead to debt and heartache!
ü Keep thinking – never stop being creative or coming up with new ideas - albeit evolutionary or revolutionary! A good entrepreneur will have a plan – a product cycle or next phase outlined. Keep your mind alive, stay entrepreneurial and keep that busy mindset fresh and active.
ü Focus –starting or growing a business will rob you and those around you of a great deal of time and energy. Be prepared that you might and most probably will need to use your spare time to nurture and grow your business – stay focussed.
ü Learn from failure - your first business idea might not deliver the reward you planned or ‘crash and burn’ – not ideal if you are designing a new plane! Entrepreneurs accept that failure is an important part of the success journey.
ü Life is about timing – always consider the timing – personally, product cycle, market conditions, competitor activity and so on. Timing is everything.
ü No, is yes – entrepreneurs will hear ‘no’ many times. Try thinking of the ‘no’s’ as a yes, just not yet! People fear change, so no is easier to say than yes sometimes!
I often hear people telling me that once their current job gets a little less busy, they will start their new business – looking at the above points – is this the mindset of a true business entrepreneur? If you believe in yourself, your product and you can agree with the above – ‘go for it!!”
