Learning Colors Your World
A MESSAGE FROM MR. RYAN
Happy December! Hard to believe that we are 31 days away from the year 2022. We hope everyone had a restful and safe Thanksgiving break. Last Thursday, as I stuffed myself full of turkey and all the fixings, I found myself thinking about how thankful I am to be a part of the Prairie View community. A community can be defined as "a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals." I intentionally use the term "community" when talking about our school as we prioritize working together to do what's best for our young learners. Last week's Parent/Guardian - Teacher conferences are a clear example that WE (parents, students, teachers, paraprofessionals, custodians, social workers, speech-language therapists, occupational therapists, our school nurse, and secretaries) are a community. It was great to receive such positive feedback from both staff and parents/guardians regarding their conference experience. When looking through the conference survey data that we collected, 100% of respondents replied that they "found the conference with their child's teacher to be informative." The provided written comments were equally as complimentary. It is apparent that the efforts of our staff are recognized and appreciated. Similarly, we want to let you know that your efforts at home with our students are also appreciated. We're a successful community because we are all working towards the same goals! So, thank you for reading with your student(s) each day, taking the time to go through take-home folders, practicing fluence boxes, logging into web-based programs, doing flashcards, etc. Please know that you are a valuable member of our community.
COGNIA-SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT SURVEY RESULTS
- Each school year, our schools give students (3-12) and parents/guardians an opportunity to provide feedback through the completion of school improvement focused surveys. The information gained from these surveys help to guide our building and district in selecting specific focus areas each year. Thank you for taking the time to complete the Fall survey. Please note that there will be an additional round of surveys shared in the spring!
- Below are links the results provided to us by Cognia. The results are in PDF form. I encourage you to look them over. Please note that the student survey results are just based on 3rd grade responses as our surveys are for grades 3-12.

KINDNESS COUNTS INITATIVE
RESOURCE NEWS!
Miss Lumsden and her crew have been working hard through the Wilson Reading System substeps as well as the Fundations program. Pictured below is some sentence work we have been doing on our whiteboards. Students are asked to circle all of our high frequency words, underline our digraphs, box in our welded sound /all/, and put a star above our bonus letters (f, l, s, and sometimes z). Marking up our words helps us recall them quicker and read more smoothly!
NEWS FROM THE READING ROOM
The Kindergarteners are learning their letter names and sounds.
First graders are reviewing those same skills and will soon be moving on to harder concepts like digraphs, blends, and glued sounds. They are also learning to decode words to help with their reading skills.
The second graders began the year with learning about blends, digraphs, and glued sounds. They have moved on to vowel teams and suffixes. We are also working on reading stories with fluency.
The third graders have also been working on these same skills. The students work very hard when they come down to the reading room and are learning a lot.
The students are also using our Vowel Valley bulletin board, which shows us the proper way to pronounce our vowels.
MUSIC NEWS
The holiday season is upon us. Students will finish the melody unit, which is the second unit of musical study, by learning some holiday-themed melodies. We usually hold an all-school singalong in the gym, however protocol won't allow that to happen. We are thinking outside of the box to foster something memorable where the student's can sing, laugh, and enjoy the love of music. The National Association for Music Education implements standards for primary music education that center around an informal performance of vocalizations. Students will complete this standard in the form of learning the melodies. They will do this by singing with a piano accompaniment, voice pedagogy, a variety of instrumental mediums, listening examples, using technogy to follow lyrical sequence,, and through a study of varying vocal styles and musical genres. Pickup notes, stanza sections, melodic movement, pitch matching, steady beat and rhythms are some of the rudimentary music concepts that students will be working on in music classes over the next three weeks.

e-LEARNING DAYS – IN PLACE OF OF “SNOW DAYS”
Winter weather in the Midwest can be somewhat of a hindrance when traveling to and from school. As in the past, using an “e-learning day” will be considered should there be inclement weather. Since Sandwich CUSD #430 is 1:1 and students and staff have their own device, please be prepared, on a daily basis, to shift to “e-learning” on so-called “snow days”. Please note, this will require everyone taking the responsibility of having their school issued personal device available for use at all times. Unlike previous years, e-learning days do not need to be made up at the end of the school year. e-learning days will be communicated via the district webpage and school messenger.
