National Surgical Technologist Week Celebration
Practical Nursing Class of October 2017
National Medical Assistants Week Celebration
Message from Jeff and Yolanda
Over the past several weeks the Health Science department has had cause to celebrate! The Surgical Technology students celebrated National Surgical Technologist Week in their classroom on September 29th (the actual national recognition occurred during our Hurricane Irma hiatus). Students were surprised with a cake and enjoyed celebrating their new found career. Then, this past week the Medical Assisting students celebrated National Medical Assistants week. Students enjoyed cake while their instructor, Sana Scognamillo, talked about the importance of the career in the health care continuum. And on the same day, the Practical Nursing program pinned 6 graduate nurses who worked very hard to achieve excellence in patient care and nursing judgment. All of these events, whether large or small, formal or informal add to the student experiences at LWTC. In this year of focusing on the importance of students to our mission as a school, we have much evidence of how the students are supported, guided and encouraged throughout their programs. With each celebration we are marking the importance of our students, their education and making memories that will last a lifetime!
Also, it is wonderful to see Health Science Instructors collaborator with non-health science instructors. When instructors Cindy Emmanuel and Melissa Stevens asked for a sugar skull and a tooth made of metal for their program, little did they dream that our talented welding student Hannah, under the guidance of instructor John Mazzarella, could create such a tremendous piece of artwork and symbol for the dental assisting program! Congratulations to all involved!
Finally, congratulation to Pharmacy Instructor Claudia Rivero on the birth of her twins Andy and Abby.

Coaches Corner
I have lived in the world of standard based education for a very long time. I know and understand the state assessment students will face at the end of the year, and work hard to plan instruction that will provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the challenges of these assessments. This probably sounds familiar to you as well. We all have goals for our students; assessments our students must take to show mastery, competency, or proficiency. We all work hard to insure we know what our students need to have mastered and plan diligently the best path to take to get them there.
But, sometimes, I need to remind myself that I am not the only one on this journey. Students are also on this ride with us. Students need to know and understand what our goal of learning is for the day, how this goal connects with what we have already learned, and how this goal connects with where we will go tomorrow. As with all good teaching, ensuring what students know and are able to do involves monitoring. Taking the time to monitor students understanding doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Often, it is much more simplistic than we make it.
If I want to monitor that students understand the goal and learning for the day, I can just ask them. Together we can pick apart the goal. Then, students can highlight important words, restate it in their own words, share it with a partner, or write a summary or paraphrase of the goal. Taking a few minutes for partners to share or for students to write independently allows me the time to circulate around the room and monitor what students understanding is before we get started for the day. If we compare the learning we do for the day to a field trip, we wouldn’t want to take off on the ride without ensuring that all the students are on the bus with us.
We would love to hear from you as well. Let us know your ideas for upcoming Coaches’ Corners. The first person to respond to me or to Paul with an idea will receive movie tickets. Ready, set, go!

Teacher’s Health – Priority #1
The number-one indicator of student success is you. Research study after research study shows that teachers make the difference in students’ lives. But what happens when you don’t feel good? To be your best, you need move, eat right, sleep enough and drink water.
Let’s support each other every day to feel good and achieve our personal health goals.
· Use your 20 oz. tumbler; fill it 2.5X / day at the refillable water station and you’ve got enough water for the day
· The high school gym is open after 2:30 – join other teachers walking on Mon./Wed.
· A walking group is forming in the high school 9/10 lunch on FRIDAYS (10:41-11:11) – meet at the high school lobby at the start of lunch. Walks will last 10-15 minutes.
· Interested in forming a softball or pickle ball team for LWTHS/LWTC, please email Dulcie Neiman at neimad@collierschools.com; leagues are forming to play against other schools.
Watch for information next week by email about signing up for the LWTHS/LWTC team forming for the CCPS Walk/Run – December 2.
