Principal's Message
Tornados, Parents, Guardians
I am extremely excited that we have begun the 2020 - 2021 school year. It’s not starting the way any of us had hoped for, but it has been so refreshing to see our Tornados as they came to YHS for our distribution days. All of us miss seeing students around our hallways and can’t wait for them to come back to us full time when it is safe.
My hope in writing this message is to convey a message of hope and provide some key elements of the YHS experience. Please read this message closely because we want all of our students to experience success early in the school year. I will be sharing more information with you throughout the school year to keep you updated regarding important information.
Important messages I can send at this time includes three things: First, attendance matters. It is essential that you are counted each and every day as you attend your classes during our distance learning. Please connect with your teachers as they will create routines that will make the attendance process seamless. Second, grades matter. Student learning is a high priority as students earn their credit toward graduation. Work completion, accessing teachers during their virtual office hours will support your academic growth. Third, we know that being away from friends and the school process is challenging. We have built support for social and emotional needs of individual students. If you are struggling, do not hesitate to seek support from your school counselor and grade level administrator.
Yelm High School offers a comprehensive educational experience. In addition to our general campus learning, YHS offers a number of College in the High School courses through a number of colleges and universities. Students can earn college credit while taking CTE courses and while enrolling in one of our many on campus courses tied to Central Washington University and South Puget Sound Community College.
On time graduation is a top priority of YHS and the Yelm Community Schools. We champion our systems and structures emphasizing ‘Graduate Yelm’ within our community. From kindergarten through twelfth grade we ensure that each of our students is provided the opportunity to follow their path toward graduation. The YHS master schedule reinforces the importance of pathways a student can access as they develop their personal interests in preparing for college or careers of their choice. We believe strongly that our students achieve high academic rates of success when challenged to be their very best.
Please feel free to reach out to an administrator, counselor, or teacher at any time. We are here to serve our community and are proud of our students, families, and community.
