St Mary's School
Friday 21st October
'The mission of the Christian in the world is a mission for all, a mission of service, which excludes no-one; it requires great generosity.' - Pope Francis
Dear whānau,
Welcome back for term 4, it has been great to get back into the swing of things and to have all our kids back on deck. We've had a ripper first week with Rosary, Sports Activator, Mass for Shine TV (thanks for all your hard work Paula Gray) and of course, our famous Mission Day - with sun and no wind!
On duty out on the playround this week I noticed all of our values - faith, hope and love in action but particularly, love: big kids creating games for our younger kids, kids picking up rubbish, kids making sure other kids had someone to play with or taking care of them when they'd hurt themselves or were missing their mum - I was surrounded by it. ❤️ Nothing like being out in the fresh air, sun shining, in amongst 200 kids knowing you've got the best job ever, at the best place ever - let's go, term 4!
Please remember, if you have something you'd like us to celebrate in the newsletter, send me through a picture and a wee blurb by Thursday 9am each week and I'll make sure it gets in - mallory.hood@stmarys.school.nz
We hop you have a fantastic long weekend.
God bless,
Mallory
Acting Principal
Happy School Days
This term we officially welcome Kym Soriano to Room Pūkeko and St Mary's School. Kym is the daughter of Nikki and Michael. Kym's sister, Lia was one of our fantastic year 6 leaders in 2021. We're stoked to have you join us, Kym. We hope you enjoy your time here at St Mary's.
New appointment for 2023
As you may know, Miss Smith is having a baby boy next February and is taking some parental leave. Who will step in you ask? Poppy McRae, that's who. Poppy is an eager and enthusiastic second year teacher and she is also an ex pupil of St Mary's (joining 7 other staff - what does that say about our wonderful school?). Poppy spent some time here in her second year as a student teacher too and when we saw her in action in the classroom, we knew she was made for our place. She has a deep understanding of, and connection to our speical character and is just an all round good sort. Where will she be teaching you ask? Don't be too nosy, class structures etc will be out in good time. Here is what Poppy had to say about herself ...
Kia ora, my name is Poppy McRae and I am 22 years old. I grew up in the Gore area and went to St. Mary's and St. Peter's as a student. I have great memories here and loved my schooling so it is exciting to be returning as a teacher! I moved to South Otago with my family in late 2016 and returned to the area this year after university to teach at Clutha Valley Primary School. I love the beach, spending time with family and friends, the farm and a spot of shopping! I look forward to getting to know your children and this fantastic school (and wider) community
Month of the Rosary
October is the month of the rosary. As a school we are gathering all together each morning to pray a decade of the rosary in Room Kiwi. The children have been amazing and it’s great to see our senior students supporting the juniors with learning the rosary. You are welcome to join us each morning at 8.50am.
Senior Long Distance Running
Today our older students went to St Peter's College to compete in the last of our running events for athletics before Eastern Southland Athletics on November 3rd. Congratulations to all who took part, 200m, 800m and 1500m are certainly no mean feat. Eastern info for those who are eligible in all events, will be out by Tuesday. The photos are from after the event, I didn't look that good and I'd just been starting the races! All the kids were desperate to get back into class and their learning while the posers below wanted to stick around for another photo.
