NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
11 February 2021

Dear Parents and Staff
Just to add to the list of unusual circumstances we have experienced over the past 12 months or so, the beginning of our new school year was delayed by a week due to the lockdown by the State Government. In his song “Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)” John Lennon from the Beatles sang way back in 1981,
"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans”
No truer is this than in these very unusual times. Let’s hope the year ahead doesn’t contain too many surprises such as we’ve experienced in the first week.
False start aside, I’m delighted to welcome everyone back to school for 2021. We have had a great start and have all quickly settled into the school life routine. I’m looking forward to a wonderful year of exciting learning and discovery for all of us.
ASH WEDNESDAY
The celebration of Ash Wednesday next week marks the commencement of the Season of Lent which is a time of renewal for each of us. Father Quynh will celebrate Mass at 9.00am for the children from Years 3 to 5 (and Year 6 if they are unable to attend Camp).
Due to the current circumstances, we have been directed to use the following procedure:
- Prior to the distribution of the Ashes Father Quynh will Bless them and then say something similar to:
Repent, and believe in the Gospel.
or
Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.
- The Sprinkling of the Ashes will follow.
o The people wear masks during the distribution of the Ashes.
o Gentle music will be played as the Ashes are distributed.
o Those distributing the Ashes will cleanse their hands before the
distribution of the Ashes.
o The people in the congregation are invited to move forward to receive Ashes whilst maintaining social distancing.
o As each person reaches the front of the line, those distributing the Ashes will take some of the ashes and sprinkle them over the person’s head without saying anything.
FINALLY!
Our much anticipated, Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) facility, has commenced and is offering great support for many of our school families. We wish a very warm welcome to our newly appointed staff Mrs Sharene Hall (Nominated Supervisor) and Mrs Alicia Whiu (Educator) who have both fitted in beautifully at Notre Dame and we look forward to working with them to provide an excellent facility.
The OSHC is open each morning from 7.00am and each afternoon from immediately after school until 6.00pm. Please contact Sharmane Dowse in the school office if you are interested in or have any queries about enrolment.
WELCOME
In addition to the new staff in the OSHC, we also welcome Mrs Kathy Tanham who joins us in an Education Assistant role supporting the children’s learning in Year Two.
YEAR SIX CAMP
I wrote to the parents of the Year Six children earlier this week to inform them that we were still hoping to go on Camp next week as long as the current travel restrictions are lifted. If this is not the case, we will explore alternate options to ensure that the children still get to enjoy this highly exciting and educational event. Parents will be advised via SMS once we have the appropriate information from the Premier’s announcement over the weekend.
P&F UPDATE
- Unfortunately, due to the current restrictions the P&F has had to postpone the welcome back Market Night that was scheduled for tomorrow evening. They are hopeful of being able to hold this great community event at a date in the not too distant future.
- To recognise Shrove Tuesday next week, which leads into the Season of Lent, the P&F has very generously offered to make pancakes for all of the children as a Recess snack. Please advise your child/ren’s teacher if your child has any dietary requirements.
PARENT INFORMATION MEETINGS
Due to the current regulations, it was not possible to hold these meetings last week. Teachers have sent information to parents regarding timetables and days for particular uniforms, Library bags etc. Should you require any further information please contact your child’s teacher via the email address that they will have provided.
OPENING MASS
This, too, could not take place last week due to the school closure. Yesterday morning each of the Year levels celebrated a Liturgy of the Word to commence our year together. I was privileged to join with the children and staff in the Year Five classes who very reverently and respectfully celebrated the start of our new school year in thoughtful prayer.

REMINDER
Friday 26 February is a Professional Development day for staff and children do not attend school on this day. Our OSHC will be operating on this day; please contact Sharmane Dowse in the school office for charges and enrolments.
TRAFFIC CONCERNS
Please do not stop in the streets surrounding the school to drop or pick-up children as this can be extremely dangerous. It is much safer to either park in the bays provided or use the drop off /pick up zone in the Parish carpark which is supervised by staff each day.
WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING OVER THE HOLIDAYS?
A great amount of work was undertaken over the school holidays :
o Paving to the front of the school (near Admin.) has been completed to replace the lawn that struggled to grow in this area.
o A shed has been purchased and will be erected in the compound near the Sports Shed to house the chairs from the storeroom in the Multi-Purpose Hall.
o Locking systems have been fitted to the gate at the side of the school near the undercover area. This will be used for access to the OSHC.
o Concrete works have also been completed in this area to address uneven paving issues.
o Air Conditioning has been fitted to the Multi-Purpose Hall.
o Two 85” TVs have been purchased to be fitted in the Multi-Purpose Hall.
o The hard courts have been re-surfaced with a coloured topcoat to be added in the next couple of weeks.
o The carpets in both Year Six classes have been replaced.
o The P&F has funded a range of modifications to the Library which will be completed during this Term.

ADMINISTRATION
HEALTH CARE CARD
In accordance with the Catholic Education WA Ltd policy the school provides considerable assistance with payment of school fees. A reminder to all Health Care Card (HCC) holders that discount applies to the HCC holder only. This discount is applied to tuition fees, amenities and building levy charges. All other school fees are payable. HCC holders are requested to complete a form available at reception and present your current Health Care Card.
ABSENTEE
An SMS will be sent to parents if your child is absent and you have not notified Administration by completing an absentee form or an email. Please reply to the SMS with your full name, name of student, date and reason student did not attend school. Just a reminder, it is a legal requirement to have on the student's file the reason for not attending school.
PHOTOGRAPH/VIDEO/NAME PERMISSION FORM
As part of the school’s publicity activities, situations may occasionally arise when the school, Catholic Education of WA (CEWA) or local media will need to take photographs and or video footage of Notre Dame children for publication in newspapers, CEWA documents, training videos and or the CEWA website. This also includes images taken during school performances, activities and sporting events. Permission forms have been distributed to each student yesterday and we ask that you sign and return them by Monday 16 February. Thank you to all the parents who have already returned the Permission forms.
MEDICAL/DIETARY RESTRICTIONS
Please do not send your child to school if they are unwell. This is very important not only for your child but the health of all children and staff. If your child has a medical condition that the school needs to be made aware of, please advise Administration as soon as possible. The appropriate forms will be sent to you to be completed, signed and returned to the front office. Please also email Administration if your child has any dietary restrictions.
ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATATION
In special circumstances, staff will be able to assist with the administration of medication. In these cases, Catholic Education of Western Australia’s policy requires principals to ensure that a comprehensive written authority is obtained from the student’s parents/guardians in a written form authorising a member of staff to administer the prescribed medication and dosage. These forms are available at the front office. In an emergency an email authorising the staff to administer medication will suffice. No medication will be administered without this consent form or email and please note, no medication is to be placed in the student’s school bag.

PRE PRIMARY CLASS NEWS
Wow! What a start we have had to Pre-Primary. The beginning of Pre-Primary looked a little different this year. We had to say goodbye to our Mums and Dads at the door and our teachers were wearing masks! This didn’t stop us though – we were all so eager and excited to begin our Pre-Primary journey. Over the past few days we have gone on a tour of the school and seen all of the new playgrounds and classrooms that we get to explore. We have also met some new teachers and were excited to start learning about Music, Italian, Science and Humanities.
There are lots of fun things for us to do in our Pre-Primary classrooms. We can build towers with blocks, go shopping at the supermarket, practise our name writing in the literacy centre and our numbers in the numeracy centre, use our imaginations when playing with the doll house and dress-ups and come up with new and exciting creations at the Lego table.
We are looking forward to starting to learn to read and write, add and subtract numbers and many more exciting things.
CANTEEN NEWS
Thank you to the Notre Dame School community for their continued support. Please remember to order your Sushi on Wednesday for Friday. See the attached flyers for the Ash Wednesday and Lent specials.
Hope to see you at the canteen.

NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL UNIFORMS SECOND HAND BUY & SELL
Did you know that a second hand uniform page, which is hosted and managed by Notre Dame CPS parents, operates on Facebook? This is a great place for you to buy and sell quality second hand uniforms. The active site is available to all members of the community who access Facebook. You can also access second hand uniforms at the school's uniform shop.
SCHOOL BANKING
School banking, other than teaching your child to save is a great fundraiser for the school. Our school receives a regular savers’ contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits placed by your child.
Open an account with the Commonwealth Bank either online or in and then your child can bring the deposit book to me in the library every Thursday morning between 8.00 and 8.30. They will receive a token for every deposit and after 10 tokens will receive a gold token and is able to choose a prize.
I look forward to meeting you soon
