ConVal High School Happenings - April 7, 2023
Message from Principal McKillop
Good Afternoon, Cougar Nation!
We celebrated the first full week of quarter four and our first athletic match of the season. Please be sure to read about more celebrations by perusing the student accomplishments below. There are so many amazing things happening in our classrooms. I would encourage you to ask your student about what they are learning. Please also note the new monthly link from School Counseling included below.
ConVal Theatre Arts will present BOUBLIL AND SCHÖNBERGS THE PIRATE QUEEN next week in the Lucy Hurlin Theatre here on campus. Please be sure to mark your calendars for April 13, 14, or 15 so you can join us for a performance. Tomorrow, Saturday, April 8, there will be a car wash in our parking lot from 11:00 am-4:00 pm. I look forward to swinging by with my car that is in need of a wash!
I hope to see many of you next week either outside cheering on our teams or inside supporting our students at the play.
Have a wonderful weekend, and GO COUGARS!
Best,
Heather

Classroom Snapshots
Mr. Fetrow's Philosophy
Mr. Moore's Music in Media
Music in Media students analyzed a pivotal scene from The Lion King. The whole class discussed how specific instruments, tempo, and dynamics reinforce the visual tone of a feature. Then students worked on creating new compositions. Fun fact: Mickey Mousing, a sound technique perfected by Disney films, occurs when music syncs with the accompanying action onscreen.

Digitial Photo & Video
Students in Digital Photo & Video I experimented with light and its effect on curved objects with their Eggie Weggie Project. The assignment required each person to take 12 different photos utilizing lighting from different places around the eggs and challenged students to not touch the egg once placed.
Careers in Education II
Students in Careers in Education II are delving into the history behind nursery rhymes by looking at their historical and literary significance. Students are creating posters about their selected rhymes that reflect the traditional lyrics, as well as alternative versions, and are discussing how these cultural devices can be used in classrooms.

Music Department Mattress Fundraiser Success!
On Sunday, April 2nd, the ConVal music department held a mattress fundraiser in the gym. What sounds like an outlandish idea proved to be highly successful with early estimates for a profit exceeding $6000. This money will be used for student activity scholarships for Band and Choir students. The music department thanks the community for their support of this fundraiser.
Student/Staff Book Club News
Hello everyone! I am sad to announce, but happy to invite you all to the final Student/Staff Book Club meeting of the year! We will be reading The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery.
In an effort to make some tentative plans, I am sending you this Google form to try to collect some data about what day would work best for everyone to meet in the future to discuss this book or perhaps watch a documentary. If you would like a copy of the book dropped off to you, please respond to this Google Form before TASC on Monday, April 10. We have 11 copies available to check out!
As I know that the end of the year can get hectic, I hope you all try your best to make one last effort to meet, share ideas, and have some quality human time with no responsibility but to be present. In the event that this book doesn’t interest you, or you just don’t have the time to commit to this meeting, I want to thank you for your interest in the Student/Staff book club and making this book club possible. I appreciate you all and I’ve had some amazing conversations with you all!
Thank you,
Eva McCullough
