AMCMS Principal's Office
What is going on in the Principal's Office?
My Challenge to You
This story moves me. This story inspires me. This story gives me hope. Why? Because in a time where people seem to argue more than they seem to get along; in a time where everyone has to prove they are right and everyone else is wrong; in a time where cultural and racial differences seem to be dividing us more than uniting us -- two people, unlikely to meet, did just that. Not only did they meet, they found a shared interest and they acted upon it.
Malcom Mitchell took a chance. So did Kathy Rackley. They took a chance on each other and stepped out of their comfort zones. Watch the videos and you will see the outcome.
What moves me the most is when Malcom says that learning to read is his greatest accomplishment. Why? He had to work at learning to read. Football came naturally to him. Reading and writing did not come naturally to him. So what did he do? He worked at it. He became a reader and a writer. He has published his own book. How is that for embracing your struggles and turning them into successes?
How about you? How can you be Kathy Rackley to a Malcom Mitchell in your classroom? There is at least one in your classes each day. What shared interests do you have with that student that you can use to build a relationship on? Share it with them and be vulnerable enough to make a connection based off that shared interest. It really is that simple.
Think. Achieve. Succeed.
Jeff

Academic Tip of the Week
Do you have students that are consistently struggling on assessments?
Try This:
Make certain that your assessments are measuring their knowledge of content and not related skills, such as reading or writing. If you suspect a reading issue please check regarding and SPED or 504 accommodations as well as with Mrs. Grey if she is aware of reading concerns with the student.
SPED Tip of the Week
The Why of Behavior
Did you know? All behavior serves one of 3 functions:
-Escape/avoidance (such as work, correction/redirection, or anything s/he doesn’t want to do)
-To get something (such as attention, preferred item/activity, etc)
-Sensory stimulation (it feels good)
Can you think of a student in your class who often has disruptive behavior? Have you ever considered why the student is having these behaviors? Often in the classroom setting, students exhibit behaviors due to academic difficulty, and the extreme behaviors allow the student to avoid the work.
What can we do to make academics less daunting and potentially decrease related to academic difficulty?
-Present tasks in smaller pieces & minimize repetitiveness
-Incorporate student interest
-Incorporate peer tutors
-Allow for student choice
