Tuesday in the Know - October 3, 2017
Congratulations Mr. Byrne!
We are pleased to announce that Fred Byrne has been selected by ACE of Florida as volunteer of the year! Fred is a volunteer with our Adult Education program and has been for the last nine years. He is an integral part of our learning community. Mr. Byrne is a never-ending support to our students. He makes a difference in the lives of his students by helping them build confidence, transition to American mathematics and he is a role model of integrity and dependability. He does an outstanding job of building relationships with his students and he is not just a great teacher but he is a great person.
Throughout his career, Fred has traveled the world and has brought his experiences to the classroom in a relevant and relatable way for his students. Mr. Byrne is a dynamic and powerful communicator who possesses the gift of being able to make complex subjects understandable. In spite of these formidable gifts, he is a humble and approachable person who loves to share his extensive knowledge with others.
Message from the Leadership Team
This week we are starting the post testing of our full-time students at LWTC. During the next two week all sites will begin their post testing of students. Instructors, please continue to review CASAS test taking strategies. If you need assistance in utilizing Burlington English Listen CASAS practice as a whole class resource please reach out to Christine Briggs. Remind students how important testing is to our program and how it is used to drive their instruction. Post testing is used to measure program success and is a factor in determining funding. Site coordinators will be working with students to schedule their testing day.
Kudos

Goal: Student Engagement
To encourage team building and communication, while reviewing content that has been previously taught, Richard Hudson’s High Beginning/Low intermediate class have fun with “bell races.” (see picture above) He asks a question, and then the team discusses. The first team to “ring” the bell gets the chance to answer. If correct, that team gets a point! The students appreciate the fun twist from the traditional paper and pencil quiz, especially if it comes with a prize such as lollipops!
Here are a few other review games that use time-effectively:
1. Personal whiteboards: You ask questions out loud, and the students write the answers on their boards and hold them up. The first correct answer wins a point for their team.
2. Group work contest: Assign a set of questions or problems to be answered by the group in a set amount of time. The group with the most correct answers wins. You’re really just adding a contest to a regular assignment.
3. Jeopardy: While you may think this game requires lots of pre-class prep work, it doesn’t have to. Yes, you need to set up some type of game board, but other than that all you need to do is choose categories based on the topics you want to review. When a student chooses “State capitals for 200” simply glance through your notes for an easier question. “Verbs for 2000”? Just ask a harder question.
4. Around the World: This classic individual game still works so well! The first two students pair off against each other. You ask a question, and whoever shouts the answer first wins. The winner stands and moves to the next contestant. The goal is to move as many seats as possible before losing, at which point the losing student sits in the seat of the person who bested him. The game ideally continues until one student makes it “around the world” and gets all the way back to his own seat. Often, though, the game simply ends when time is up, and the person who traveled the farthest wins.
