Cougar News
Week of May 16th - May 20th
Letter from Principal Nelson
Smallville-
Lot’s to report on since our last correspondence. So let’s get to it.
Re-cap of STAAR Testing: All of your students took at least two multiple-choice State assessments, and Eighth-grade students took four.
Moving on.
Re-cap of Splashfest: Last week was epic! Wet (not called Dry-Fest, mind you), wild, and wooly! Unlike most fundraisers on campus, this one appealed to all ages. We had siblings from feeder schools, future Cougars, parents, and guardians, and our staff congregating together to celebrate the year and raise money for our programs. Putting this together is no small feat and requires aid from the entire community to pull off. The Marvelous Mrs. Newell and our fantastic PTA have been planning for this event since before the Pandemic, and we have all reaped the benefits of their preparation.
We had around 750 students participate in the festivities, and of those assembled, I reckon all 750 left damper than when they arrived. The smiles on their faces throughout and their want to engage with their friends in a safe, cheerful, albeit wet, manner made this day special, and we are so fortunate our kids and our community embraced the fun. Yes, we raised lots of much-needed money, but more importantly, our students got to experience the benefit of home and school working together for their benefit.
HB4545 Summer School: We are sending out a Google Form this weekend to around 300 students about HB4545 Summer School being offered here on campus from June 6th until June 21st. The Reading and Math sessions will be taught by our own teachers, and transportation is provided for those who currently receive it. It will run from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 and will eliminate the need for most after-school and early morning tutorial sessions next year. If your student is invited and attends, they will most likely not need to attend any extra tutorials throughout the school year. If you receive the form, please fill it out and return it so as quickly as possible so we can start creating the 10:1 ratio rosters.
There are only two more Fridays left, and then it’s 2.5 months of Saturdays for our students.
Enjoy!

Are you thinking “do I really have to register online? My kid is already enrolled.”
Yes! We need all parents to online register EVERY year, so that we have the most current information on file. This helps ensure we have appropriate staffing too.

Summer Camp Section

The AISD Summer Theatre Series is back!
Students of all experience levels are welcome to shine on stage during the free Summer Theatre Series program. Current fifth through 12th graders in Austin ISD are invited to try out for the program’s seventh consecutive season.
The program will start June 6 and run through July 25 and will feature The Addams Family musical production, Alice in Wonderland black box studio production, and the new Summer Theatre Series Rising Stars program—a one-week educational theatre camp that offers workshops in acting, dance and voice.
The technical track of the Summer Theatre Series allows students to explore design and construction in costumes, make-up, scenery, properties, lights, and sound. Students will work with professionals from the Austin theatrical community to create all of the technical elements of the productions.
Rehearsals take place at the Austin ISD Performing Arts Center. Several transportation options will be provided for participating students, including a daily bus running to and from Bedichek Middle School, carpools and free city bus passes available through the Kids Ride Free program with Capital Metro. City bus locations are located at the corner of Mueller Boulevard and Barbara Jordan Boulevard, and across from Dell Children’s Hospital.
Students interested in participating must register by April 13 and video auditions need to be submitted by April 15.
An audition workshop and Q&A session will be available Monday, April 11. For access to audition materials and more information on the 2022 Austin ISD Summer Theatre Series, go to www.austinisd.org/arts.
For questions, please contact Program Coordinator, Jessica Champion, at jessica.champion@austinisd.org.
