21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
No ... I'm not talking about the song made famous by Andy Williams and is currently being played often on 93.9 FM until after Christmas ... but from a sports perspective it was a HUGE week in the land of the Brickies! The Hobart football team was hoping to be STAYIN' ALIVE (Bee Gees) on the gridiron in IHSAA post season play after a Sectional Title tilt with Lowell on Friday and Girls basketball officially opened up the winter sports season with a couple exciting contests!
Better grab a seat and some popcorn ... it's time for BricksCenter!
Football
Hobart got the ball first and took possession inside their own 20 yard line. For the next 7 minutes, the Brickies methodically drove the ball down field ... controlling the line of scrimmage, running the ball with authority and converting on 3rd & 4th down when needed. As our boys threatened inside the 10, Lowell's defense stood tall and the Brickies had to settle for a 22-yard FG from junior Miki Djankovich and an early 3-0 lead.
The Red Devils came right back on their ensuing possession ... applying the same kind of mix the Brickies did on their scoring drive ... and were able to punch it in from 3 yards out on the 1st play of the second quarter to capture what turned out to be their only lead of the game, 7-3.
After the two teams traded punts, Hobart began to drive the ball again, but this time senior Riley Johnston found a seam on the right side and scampered 25 yards for a TOUCHDOWN!!! Djankovich drilled the extra point and the Brickies were back on top 10-7 heading into the halftime break!!
In the 3rd quarter, BOTH defenses locked down the opposing offense - resulting in no scores and a tight 10-7 game with one quarter left to play.
Midway through the final quarter, the Brickies seemed to be driving for a game-clinching score, but the Red Devils were able to engineer a stop as Johnston's 4th-down pass intended for classmate Zach Vode fell incomplete in the endzone ... setting up a DRAMATIC FINISH. Lowell now had the ball with 4:35 to play and roughly 80 yards in front of them for the win. The Red Devils pushed the ball across the 50 and it looked as if they might have a shot to tie with a FG or win with a TD. However, the BEASTS OF THE BRICKYARD came through with a TREMENDOUS STOP!! On 4th and 3 at the Hobart 45-yard line with only 1:46 left in the game, senior Bobby Babcock brought pressure and junior Ryan Flores stepped in front of a pass to knock it down!! The deflected pass resulted in a turnover on downs for the Devils and enabled the Brickies to secure their 2nd CONSECUTIVE IHSAA SECTIONAL TITLE!!!
Final Score: Hobart 10, Lowell 7 ... the Brickies are headed to the REGIONAL!!!
This was Hobart's 22nd overall sectional title in football, tying the Brickies with Jimtown High School for the 7th-most championships in state history. As high-powered as the Brickie offense has been over the last 6 weeks, the Hobart D-D-D-DEFENSE was particularly LIGHTS OUT on Friday against the Devils. The BEASTS OF THE BRICKYARD held Lowell to less than 150 yards of total offense, had 5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 6 quarterback hurries, 6 pass deflections, and punter Zach Vode averaged nearly 40 yards per kick!! OUTSTANDING!!
The Brickies are now 9-2 on the season and will play @ Logansport NEXT FRIDAY NIGHT for the IHSAA REGIONAL CROWN! DON'T STOP NOW BOYS!!

Girls Basketball
On Wednesday night, Hobart battled Michigan City in non-conference action. This one was bound to be an intriguing match-up as each team was opening the season in a completely different spot. The Lady Wolves returned almost EVERYONE from last year's IHSAA Sectional Finalist team ... the Lady Brickies, on the other hand, had to replace 5 impact players from last year's 10-win squad. The first half was a BATTLE! Hobart outplayed the girls from City for 16 minutes, but found themselves in a hole 23-12 at the break. Unfortunately, offensive struggles plagued the Lady Brickies in the 2nd half and Michigan City was able to pull away for a lopsided 64-32 victory. Sophomore Asia Donald led Hobart with 12 points ... senior Lexi Williams added 7 in the loss.
Saturday night, the Lady Wolves of Boone Grove came to H-town with a much-improved group of young ladies looking to avenge last season's 57-19 drubbing from the Lady Brickies. Early on, it was ALL HOBART as our girls SHINED! Hobart went up 14-7 after 8 minutes of play ... started the 2nd quarter on a 6-1 run to extend the lead and held a sizable 32-13 lead going into halftime!! Just when it appeared Hobart might run away from Boone for a 2nd consecutive year, the Lady Wolves battled back, outscoring the Lady Brickies 20-5 in the 3rd quarter and cutting the 19-point halftime deficit down to only 4 ... 37-33 ... heading into the 4th quarter. The last 8 minutes were INTENSE as each team made plays in a back-and-forth struggle to gain an advantage! EVERY TIME Boone had a chance to tie or take the lead, Hobart would corral a HUGE rebound ... make an outlet pass or bust out on the dribble that led to a fast-break opportunity and the Lady Brickies would capitalize to maintain control of the lead! As the final buzzer sounded, it was Hobart 51, Boone 41!!! WHAT A GAME!!
Sophomore SENSATION Asia Donald was AMAZING as she connected on 10/11 FTs and scored a game-high 28 points to help our girls secure their 1st win of the season! That's right math people ... Donald accounted for over 50% of the Hobart offense - WOW!!!
The Lady Brickies are 1-1 on the season and are scheduled for two more contests next week ... @ Kouts on Wednesday and @ Griffith on Saturday. Looks like our girls will need to do their best impression of Mad Max and be ROAD WARRIORS! LET'S GO!!!!
